1984 johnson 60 h.p. no spark

Whats up everyone,<br />My above outboard ran fine 2 weeks ago then tonight went out to start it to take it out for its first voyage with me as owner. I had no spark on either cylinder. The red plug coming from the control box, I took the plug apart and one of the prongs was corroded and was broke apart. Now my question is could this be the problem. I also blue the small fuse that comes off of the soleniod and that fuse was blown but i think i blew it when i took the plug apart and was messing with it cause i seen it arc a little bit.

Hi There I will try give you some help. You said you had no spark so I assume you check this way took out each plug and ground to engine block and turn the key to spin this engine and while looking at the plug you didn’t see any spark. If you have not done that yet it would be a nice test to do to check that you have no spark.<br />Make sure that the kill switch wire is not grounded somewhere. If you know where the wire are and which one is which then you check it the way like I do Which is to disconnect it the first place you can close to the engine that way you eliminate the chance that the kill switch or wire is bad some where. and with spark plugs out and grounded to block give the engine a spin and see if you get a spark. <br />If you try this with the spark plug in and it starts you have no way to turn it off. You will have to think of a way other than using the kill switch.<br /><br />I will not be responsible for my post If someone miss reads or misunderstand my post which is just advice on how I think it will help the problem. Thanks for the reply Made Cool,<br />I tested the spark with a spark plug tester with neg results. The red plug that i am talking about is the main engine harness plug. One of the plugs inside the main engine harness at the side of the engine that comes from the control box was corroded and broken completly off and i am not sure if it broke when i pulled it apart or if it just lost connection. I am going to try and check the kill switch tomorrow and was wondering if i could just run a seperate wire for the one that fell apart. Leave the red connector disconnected and try to jump out the starter at the selonoid and see if you get spark. If so, it's probably the kill switch as suggested above.

If you have the factory service manual, go to the wiring diagram. It will show you an end view of the red connector. Look at which prong is broken in your connector, and match it with the diagram. That will show you what color wire is broken, and what it does.

Yea, I think that be the best way to Troubleshoot <br />this problem is to check for a short.<br /><br />I will be checking every day or 2 this post to see how it going and maybe give some advice.<br /><br />If you got wires that look that bad than one could be shorted somewhere and the problem with that is maybe your kill wire (the wire that shuts your engine off is grounded) is shorted. I explained above how I check mine. It might sound confusing and maybe someone will be able to explain it in a different way than I did.<br />"Assuming that you checked for spark to all spark plugs and your are sure that your not getting any spark to any of them". If That the case there could be a short. Both of the problems noted can cause a no spark condition. The fuse definetely will. Never pull apart any connectors with the battery connected. You probably popped the charging system rectifier too. The engine will still run but it will not charge the battery.<br /><br />Fix the connector, replace the fuse and see what you get.

Thanks everyone for the help. Tomorrow when i get to work i will give it a shot. Quick question for Cannon, if i popped my charging rectifer how do i know or check to see if it is charging?Can i just hook a volt meter to the pos. and neg. and see if its putting out 13-14 volts?<br />Thanks again everyone<br />Joshua H.<br />Think safety on the water<br />File a float plan
