Hi Folks
new member but have been reading this forum for some time.
I have a 1984 Johnson 60 HP Model # J60ELCRE I have two Manuals for this motor but can't seem to find the max RPM rating. I think I need to change props. Current prop is 11 1/2 X 16 and runs 4000 RPM WOT. Any help would greatly appreciated.

I have the same motor albeit a slightly earlier model......the operating range will be on the id plate but it should be 5000 to 6000rpm......the standard prop is a 11 3/4 x 17......are you sure the current wheel is a 16? Your quoted rpms seem a little low for that pitch unless you are trying to push a barge with it. You might have more success asking your question over in prop forum.

I think it's 5000, but not sure. I would post this in the propeller forum, great guys over there. You'll need to post:
Is motor new to boat?
Did it used to run max before?
What size boat is it on?
Is compression good?
Good luck.

Re: 1984 Johnson 60 Hp

the factory manual says that it is between 5000 and 5500,but most people run it a bit higher (57-58). But it all depends on the rig that you are pushing. If it is very big ,you should go down to a 12 or 14 pitch. but there are very often other reasons that should be corrected as well. Maybe your engine is set to far forward and it pushes the bow of the boat down instead of up, or the boat is too big for the prop. Maybe you are poorly loaded. In a nutshell, take everything out of the boat and run it that way. play with the trim and see if that improves the situation. Last but not least, check if your flotation foam is dry. You may carry a few hundred pounds of water hidden in the foam.
Good luck.

Re: 1984 Johnson 60 Hp

Ok thanks for the replies
The boat is a 1970 16' Starcraft Sprint-V. Some things to note. 8 hp Merc on back for a kicker motor. I have moved the two fuel cans for the main motor 6 gallon to the bow. One 6 gallon under the splash well for the kicker. Three people in the boat (550 lbs total). Also has a full fishing top 6' tall. The Tachometer is new and I guess could be reading wrong. I did try adjusting the trim but made no difference to rpm at Wot But I did pick up 2 MPH. The load seems well balanced the boat handles well. Motor appears to be running well. Top speed at current configuration 31 MPH. I am not looking for more speed. I am concerned about the RPM and not getting the best gas mileage I can. So maybe I should start looking for other reasons for the low RPM? Or the boat is just too loaded up?

Your tacometer is probably just fine. The culprit is your fishing top. 6 by 5 is a 30 square foot sail ,18 gallons of fuel is 18 times 8 pounds, a kicker will way in at 70 pounds. You did not mention your battery.
144 pounds in fuel a seventy pound kicker and probably a battery will weigh in at 250 pounds. Me thinks that your overall weight is about 200 pounds more than you might think.
you may try to take your fishing top down for a trial run, chances are that you will gain about 5 or 6 hundred rpm.

Took another peek at the id plate of my '82......it confirms the operating range to be 5000 to 6000rpm.

Re: 1984 Johnson 60 Hp

Ok found the specs for the rpm on the air intake cover. It states 60HP at 5500 RPM. I am only getting 4000 RPM at WOT. Something is wrong. prop is very close to spec. Yes I am running a little heavy but not so heavy as to explain a loss of 1500 RPM. Tachometer is set for 10 pole as per Faria specs in installation instructions. I am open to suggestions.

With the 16 fitted you should be revving higher than a standard prop (17) would on the same setup if anything......id say your speed (31mph) on a 16 footer is about right.....you might have to revisit the way the tach has been setup, sorry dont know the pole setting.
