I was trying to get the timing corrected on my motor yesterday and the timing light would not work off of the #1 cylinder. It worked on the #2 cylinder, I switched the spark plug wires and it still wouldn't work on the #1 cylinder. Got out the spark tester and used that, which showed a good spark. I tried the timing light on the wire coming from the plug to the ignition coil and it worked on that. Do any adjustments need to be made timing wise to use this way? The ignition coil assembly for the #1 cylinder is also brand new.

Your spark tester may say good but the power from that #1 coil may be insufficient to power the timing light pick up. Try switching the coils. I'll bet the number one coil is on its way out.
