I have a 1984 Johnson 70 I am rebuilding and I need some help with wiring it back up. There are two wires (purple and brown or red) that come down from the junction box for the tilt and trim and head to the terminal block, what slot do these wires go in? Where on the starter do I ground it back to the battery? The same bolt the power comes to from the solenoid?

Go to the top secret files at the begining of this forum and look up wiring diagrams. I was just there and found your mtr.

Re: 1984 Johnson 70 Wiring Questions

I have the repair manual and the wiring for the tilt and trim go to the 4th and 5th spots on the terminal but it lists them both as black. I assume the purple wire coming from the junction box goes to the 5th spot since it is labeled purple. The starter motor in the wiring diagram just lists a common engine ground coming off of the stater. Do I bolt the wire from the negative terminal on the battery to one of the starter motor mounting bolts?

To either that or any clean ground on the mtr power head.
