I have a 1984 9.9 HP commercial grade manual start motor with Serial 682-049356. Actually it reads 9.9M 682C-S049356 on the serial tag. When looking up props here on iboats as well as other parts places on line I can't find anything for Mariner dated before 1986. Has anyone else run into this problem, and if so were you able to find a prop. My current prop is a 9 1/4 x 9 aluminum. The hub is spun on it and I was looking to just by a new one, possibly SS and then have the onld one repaired for use as a back up. Please if anyone has some answers please let me know. Thanks.

Re: 1984 Mariner 9.9C - Need new prop

Ok, an update for those viewing this post. I've ordered a prop through boats-dot-net. The prop I odered is a yamaha prop. I came to this prop by searching an 84 Yamaha 9.9 hp motor. I've confirmed with boats-dot-net customer service that it is an 8 tooth spline which matches my prop spline. So at this point it's a waiting game until it arrives to see if it works. I'm hopeful that it will. The guy I've emailed back and forth with at boats-dot-net stated that he has sold yamaha propellers for mercury/mariner motors before. He did not state whether is was a success or not. I'll let everyone know the outcome once the new prop comes in. Thanks.

If you look up a prop for a 1984 Yamaha 9.9, it's the same thing.

Yamaha made those Mariner motors.

Yep, that's what I've done. Prop should be in tomorrow or the next day. So we'll see what happens.

Re: 1984 Mariner 9.9C - Need new prop

All right folks, the new prop came in yesterday and it works perfect. Now let me ask this. When the old props hub spun and my motor over reved for an instant, is it possible that the impellar was damaged. Will the engine not start if the impellar is damaged and not pumping water. I ask because I put the new prop on last night, and put the motor in a clean trash can with water, and I couldn't get the thing started. It did start twice actually, but died out almost instantly as though it was getting flooded out. That is the first time this has ever happened with the motor. This motor always starts and runs perfectly as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. I'm going to replace fuel lines and filter on motor. Maybe that'll get it going. Pulled the plugs they were heavily coated in gas/oil, but from all the threads ive read, I gather that is normal. Anyhow, any thoughts out there. Thanks.

A simple over rev wouldn't hurt the impeller. If you don't know how old the impeller is you should change it anyway.
Coated with gas and oil isn't normal. It may be symptom of a malfunction.A weak spark may leave things wet.
And a carb malfunction could as well.If the float is stuck you might get it to free up by tapping carefully on the carb near where the gas line is connected.I like to use a small box end wrench like a 7/16.If its flooding it might start if you disconnect the fuel line and try to start it.
Once it starts you may be able to connect the fuel line and keep it running, the vibration may free it.

Re: 1984 Mariner 9.9C - Need new prop

The impellar is right at a year old a little less actually, and the carb was re-built right around this time last year, Octoberish. I wouldn't think the carb would've reached a point where its malfuntioning after just under a year, but certainly isn't out of the realms of possibility. It was running fine the weekend before last outside of the prop hub slipping. Like I say I'll replace the fuel lines within the cowling and fuel filter, and replace the plugs and try to drain the carb bowl and see if that does the trick.

Re: 1984 Mariner 9.9C - Need new prop

Ok, so the I changed the fuel lines and the plugs, and that did not do the trick. I think there is a jet in the carb stuck or like said above maybe the float is stuck. If indeed that is the case, it's a shame cause the carb was just rebuilt less than a year ago and probably doesn't have 2-3 hours on it tops since the rebuild. So the next question is, does anyone have instructions on how to rebuild the carb for this motor. There isn't alot of information on mariner carb rebuilds on the net, just OMC and mercury. Can I do it myself or just take to a shop and have them do it.

You should be able to tell if the carb is flooding by squeezing the primer bulb till firm if it refuses to get firm it may be flooding.
If you disconnect the fuel line the flooding should clear as you continue to try to start it. If you feel it may be flooding turn off the
choke. You may find after market manuals at the library.
If you post your problem in the Merc/ Mariner repair forum someone may be able to help.
