Well finally got around to trying to get the boat going its a 1984 chris craft scorpion 210 - has just over 500 hours on it. Did tons of work in the last year on it, new interior, floor, fixed the rotted frame rail, replaced the impeller, replaced hydraulic lines on the stern drive, new cap, wires, plugs, rotor, oil, filter, fuel filter, replaced all the gauges, repaired the brakes on the trailer, new lights on the trailer, new valve covers.

HAd the boat running fine last year, started and idled and revved up great. but didn't take it out as I was still working on some things and only had weekends to work on it and not many at that...

Fast forward to now, about a year later, replaced the alternator, starter, ground and trim pump cables. went with 1 gauge for the starter and ground, 2 gauge for the alternator and 4 gauge to the trim pump. I know probably overkill, but I had some issues cranking with a jump pack on the old battery so figured couldn't hurt to take resistance out of the equation. that helped and it cranked a bit more, but not much. pulled the plugs, looked good and new, turned the motor by hand, not frozen, cranked with plugs out, starter turned it over fine. put in a new battery.

Boat cranks great, has spark, but noticed it would not start, not even a burp, just a crank and thats it. I pulled the flame arrestor, and noticed no fuel getting to the carb, as in its bone dry. figured must be out of gas (fuel gauge did show about empty so added about 15 gallons, crank, same thing, no start. put a little gas in the carb, fired up right away then died.

Checked fuel / water separator, there is fuel in it, but not sure if its there from last time it started.

I suspect its the fuel pump. I tried to get the fuel line off the carb, but it is on tight and I didn't want to damage it, so I left it alone. But I know last year when I got it started, fuel would go in the carb when I cycled the throttle before stating.

Any ideas on this. Is it a bad fuel pump? I tried tapping on it with a mallet and nothing. If it is the pump, Which fuel pump should I buy? I looked online and saw a few that could work, things like carter style etc. no idea what those are.

Thanks for any help, I hope to get it running and back on the water soon. Boat has usually never let us down since we have owned it from new. always started great and always ran like a scalded dog.

Ayuh,.... Try a remote tank hooked to the fuel filter, 'n see if the pump, will pump...

So I would take the line off the inlet to the pump, connect a fuel can to that bypassing the fuel tank and see if we get it running that way. If it runs then obviously there is a restriction in the tank somewhere causing the fuel not to be able to make it to the pump. is that where you are going with it?

Fuel pumps are not expensive so I may just put one in as a preventative measure but I will try what you suggest next time I am at the boat before I decide to go get a pump.

If I do need a pump, any recommendations on which one to get?

Thanks,

Followup to this issue, New Fuel pump fixed it. Put it in and it fired up and ran good. probably have to do some tweaking but will do that on the water after it has been run.
