1984 Mercruiser 3.0 140 hp questions

I have a 1984 VIP with the mercruiser 3.0 140hp motor. I have some knocking coming from the rockers and had a question. Is this model hydrolic or mechanical? If mechanical what do they need to be spaced at?

I am also getting ready to check the timing. Does anyone know what the timing needs to be set at? And, does the distributor in this year and model have points?

I've got an 86 3.0 that I've done a bit of work on recently.

Timing is 6 degrees BTDC.
You SHOULD have points, unless someone has changed things over to something like a Pertronix setup. Open the distributor and have a look. Also a good time to inspect the cap and rotor. Mine needed plug wires, I think they were original.
Lifters should be hydraulic.
Valve lash adjustment has been discussed quite a bit recently, and a search will give you better instructions than I can.
