I got my 83 mercury out the other day for the first time this year. Upon initial start up everything seemed normal I idled around the harbor with no issue. I goosed the throttle a few times to make sure it had good power which it did. All of the sudden the boat stalled on me instantly and would not restart and now will only run above 1500 rpm in neutral anything below that it stalles instantly. I have replaced all plugs and gave it a good dose of seafoam in the fuel and in the carbs. Any ideas? Thank you

Check the output of the low speed stator. The stator has 2 windings, High speed operates above about 1500 and the low speed below about 1500rpm.

A quick to check for spark is to hook up a timing light to one plug and see if it goes out below 1500 rpm.

OK guys It finally got nice enough to again here in Nebraska to work on the boat again. I have determined I have no spark in cylinders #3 or #4. Could it be the trigger plate? Thanks again for the help
