Having an issue with my motor, ran good alll day yesterday and then when i got home to flush'er out the motor stalled, but i could hear something running in the motor, sounded like the starter or something related to the starter, so naturally i turned the key to off and removed the key from the ignition, but it didn't cut power to whatever was spinning in the motor! So, motor off, ignition off, something still spinning. So i removed the wires from the battery terms which obviously killed it, tried lubing up the ignition but no change. now when i connect the wires to the battery it sparks like hell and the motor cranks like its trying to start. Would this be a bad starter solenoid issue? or is there a short in the ignition likely? if its the ignition, how is that dealt with? i have never done that...

Can it be fixed in that case or is it a replace?

I'm betting on the starter solenoid as well, and that's a replacement item. Typically non-repairable unless you're really desperate!

Mercury part # 96054, be sure to verify the year of your motor by serial # to ensure you're getting the correct part.

BTW if you have power trim' n' tilt on your motor, the same solenoid is used. I've seen a lot of these fail, but usually the contacts go bad and won't pass power. The contacts on your solenoid likely welded themselves together.

Those ones you can pry open with a screwdriver and file down the sticky contacts or resolder the broken connection from tightening too much....

Usually the contacts will pit enough so they will not make contact, the starter will not have voltage. If the contacts weld together like yours did, they will remained closed even with the switch off, the starter will always have voltage.

Ok that makes sense. Guess i just assumed that the key cut the power to everything so no key no juice, thanks for the answer

Anyone have a link to a thread that may walk me through where yo find this on the motor and the order of operations for replacing?

Re: 1984 Mercury 90hp Ignition/Starter issue

There should be a short heavy wire from the stud on the starter to the solenoid, the solenoid usually is a black block with a heavy stud coming in and one going out with a small wire attached to engauge it. IMO, solenoid contacts should never be filed and expected to last. Once that coating is gone, they will burn again very soon. You should be able to pull your shrowd and connect the battery without hitting the key, if it starts cranking, your solenoid is stuck. If its stuck, rap it to see if it frees but be careful, that is power right from the battery unfused. Its an easy diagnosis and an easy fix if that's what it is.
