good chance the stringers are all waterlogged and rotted and the boat's not worth saving. Check it out before investing any money - an ice pick is good for exploring - drill test holes into the stringers - waterty mush coming out on a drill bit means BIG repairs needed- epoxy filling not going to help.

Re: 1984 Omc I/o

Hello to all-

Tomorrow is the big day when I will finally tow this boat to a reputable dealer (so I've been told from several different locals). He will give me an estimate on repairing the stringers, replacing the transom seal, (part is $105 on e-bay but I'm sure the labor will be $$$ and I've decided that's OK), but now here is another issue, any ideas?
I bought a brand new 'Die Hard - Marine' battery back when I first bought the boat, just because. After the boat has sitting for a month or so now, and on its way into the shop tomorrow- I decided to charge up the battery. But, I hooked up the alligator clips and there was no spark!? I did some trouble shooting and see that this brand new battery appears to be fried. I hooked the charger up to the the battery on my Bass boat and it works fine.
Any ideas would be appreciated with the exception of 'you shouldn't have bought this boat' which I already realize.
Hope you are having a better evening than I am.

Best regards, Arty

How far back is "back then" that you bought the battery? If only a few months, it will be under warranty.

You "tested it and it was fried", did you put a load on it and it was dead? If your battery charger is an automatic electronic one, some won't try to charge a battery of less than 4 volts, it assumes a wrong connection. Try a cheap, basic charger.

I was sure I left the ignition key off, but just realized it was in the accessories position. Must have drained the battery while its been sitting. False alarm- thanks anyway.

I know it's been eons since I started this thread; but I'm bored on this 4th of July and thought I'd post the updated photos for anyone who's still interested. Paul had to cut out a large portion of the transom and re-build it, a new rubber boot was installed, stringers repaired, redone fiberglass around engine mounts, all new marine grade hardware for engine mounts, tilt and trim repaired, alternator belt replaced and spare hung in position so that engine doesn't have to be hoisted for replacement next time, and a 3 way battery kill switch installed. Boat hums along at 45mph, and feels safe and solid. Original quote was 2 grand, but since a friend of a friend who own's a dealership and does repair work himself did it he only charged me $1000. Happy 4th! Arty
