The float height is a measurement. it goes both ways.

With a little patience, you could rebuild the carb in a couple hours. Take it apart, clean it, put it back together. You will need a rebuild kit which is available on Iboats.

Heres a sierra kit

Read over the manual to get an Idea of it and follow the instructions.

DO NOT bend the float. If you do, then you must replace it.
There is no float adjustment on that carb. Obviously, if you have to push down on the float to get it to run, you have a problem with the float or the needle valve. Replace both and be done with it.

The entire carb needs to get cleaned out.;)

The new kit might come with the needle valve.

Ok, so you have 2 choices...buy a kit and attempt to rebuild it yourself with the possiblity you might have to take to somebody...or just take it to somebody and have them do it...Either way your boat is not going to run right until you do it.

rebuilding a carb is not all that dificult. just pay attention and readthe dir. price should be 20$ or so. it will fix any prob with float and needle. or just take it off and get someone to do it for you. around 150$

Not familiar with marine prices are you? The carb kit price for a Sierra aftermarket kit is $64. Doesn't include his bad float, or corroded carb, or whatever is actually causing the problem.
We haven't see the carbs inside, so how can you say what it's going to take to fix it. You also don't know where he lives or the going prices in his area.

Re: 1984 Volvo Penta 2.3 carb problems HELP

I just reviewed the manual regarding rebuilding the carb. It has good step by step instructions.

Sounds to me, like the float has leaked, but we won't know until you tear it down.

When I've done carbs, I just lay the parts out in the order I remove them. If the carb was gone through 14 months ago, It shouldn't need a lot of cleaning and soaking. Makes it all that much easier. Just go through it now and be done with it.;)

If you're going to be an owner of an old boat, get used to working on the boat. Otherwise, pay up.

This carb job is just the beginning.:rolleyes:

Earlier you asked.....

How hard is it 2 rebuild the carb? Im pretty good with my hands ive just never done it b4.

I understand being nervous and making sure you are at least familiar with the basics before tackling it.... but come on! Eventually you are going to have to either try it or take it somewhere. The only way to find out what it costs it to ask the shop where you end up taking it. The only way to find out what the kit costs is to order it. The only way to find out what the float costs is to order it. When you get into it and run into a jamb, ask then. But at some point you need to DO.

After looking at the online VP parts list. It appears you may need to buy one of several kits for rebuilding that carb. The float may come in one of the kits but it's hard to tell. In this link it shows two carb part numbers but the repair kits are the same.

I would suggest trying to find a dealer locally that knows the parts breakdown better and is familiar with the older Volvos.

Incidentally, you say your boat is has a 230 engine but your boat is much older. Are you aware of it being repowered prior to you getting it?
