Hey there,
I have a few questions about my boat and possible future projects. I appreciate anyone's advice.
. I bought my boat in February of this year. The engine was cracked and I had it repaired. (Got the boat for a steal.) I chose to buy an older boat because I didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a boat until I knew what I was doing. Prior to me buying the boat I hadn't been on one in years but have always wanted one. To date I have spent $3300 for the boat, engine repair, and renovations. I have wired and installed a radio deck and two speakers, a fish/depth finder, spare battery, installed a power adapter outlet, added in line fuses to both, added a ski tow to back of boat, replaced all the cleets, put new boards on trailer and recarpeted them, recarpeted boat, rewires trailer lights, replaced winch strap contraption, recovered dash and gauges, re-upholestered all the seat covers and have made a replacement engine cover board with padding and upholstery twice. (First time I forgot to bolt it to hinges, didn't forget the second time!) I wanted to learn as I go and be able to make mistakes that wouldn't cost thousands of dollars to repair. Plus I had gone through cancer the year before and wanted to prove to myself that I could do whatever I set my mind too. Anyways, its been great so far, I really feel like I have a little knowledge. My boat ladder is very small and semi hard to access when in the water. As much as my daughter and her friends swim and tube and get in and out of the boat when were on the lake I think a platform will come in handy. Plus right now I can't lay in the sun and enjoy them as they get in and out so much and have to crawl on the boat cover I lay out on to get in and out of boat.
The other issue I have recently faced is that I find it very hard for me to pull myself out of water. The ladder handle is very slippery and I'm always nervous the ladder might suddenly break off because the boat is so old (I know delusional woman ideas). One of my winter projects is to replace the ladder and I thought while I was at that I would just add a platform? I have fibromyalgia stemming from all the cancer treatments no doubt, so I know that's part of my issue but I think maybe a platform will make it easier to get in the water.
I've read about platforms, adding them, how to add them, and even watched a YouTube video on how to, (Now I'm an expert woohoo!!), and I think I am capable of doing it. My biggest concern is that some I have seen seem to have brackets supporting them that go to the bottom of the boat and some don't have any brackets. What is the best kind of platform to install DIY, and my boat has a rooster tail, will adding a platform interfere or be bad?
I know it may seem crazy to do all this to such an old boat but to me it makes sense. And I plan on keeping it at least two maybe three years so that I can learn as much as I can before going on to a bigger boat. It is a 1984 Wellcraft American 180 inboard/outboard 18'. The rooster tail I wouldn't say comes up too high, but I'm a horrible judge of distance. I am just concerned the platform would be in the way of that. Again, I appreciate any advice and apologize for the novel.
Us women, tend to give all the relevant and non relevant information.
