I GOT MY BLOCK BACK FINALLY!! I'll have pics up this weekend on how it looks! 2 cyl got machined .15 over, 2 new piston kits .15 over and 4 cyl's got deglazed and honed. Powerhead gasket kit, 4 piston ring kits, and a set of bleed restrictors. PLUS! The whole block got a chemical bath to clean her all up! SOOO NICE!

I love these motors I have a 90 same year but mine is corroded and would never come apart like that and the block is painted black. Is it me or has that motor been torn down before? Look really good inside.

Well, i've got a ton of pics to add but my stupid laptop won't read my memory card!! GRRR!
Also.. It seems that I'm a little lucky with these inline 6's. I just baught another 115Hp Mercury with power tilt/trim for $500! I looked at her, and looks good. All 6 piston domes are clean, and no damage! I need to set up a test stand, and try to fire her up! The only issue that I can see is the lower unit stab fin has be grinded pretty badly. I have a metal shop I work with for my job, and I can get a chunk of Aluminum welded on and reshape the lower unit. SWEET!

ALRIGHT!! Finally got some more pics, this is the LAST of the teardown of the powerhead (I HOPE!) I've got everything apart, and ive got all the new parts on thier way! I got some pics attached of how bad Piston #2 and #4 were. #4 was just toast!! #2 just looked like it was tired, so since i've got it apart and its getting all new bearings, and rings, why not 2 new pistons!

SO! The block is beautiful, and waiting for her pistons to be installed.. I'm just waitting for my darn parts to arrive!

So the nicely cleaned and machined block will get!
-2 New +.015 piston kits (Piston, Wrist Pin, Lock pins, and Rings)
-4 New ring sets for the Std pistons that have been cleaned spotless!
-All new piston/rod bearings
-All new Rod/Crank needle bearings (These buggers are expensive!!! I went for just replacing the needle bearings and not the whole kit, which includes the cages. If I baught "Quicksilver" i would have spent $120 on one bearing! That would have been $720! NO WAY! So my local marine machine shop sold me the needles for $20 a set. Not bad!
-All new main bearings
-Upper and Lower ball bearings
-Shaft seals
-Bleed Restrictors

I've lost track already.. HAHA! Too many parts... oh and a complete powerhead gasket set.. Nice

By the way, the reason for all new needle bearings is because they had a slight blue hue to them.. not all of them.. I feel that if I have the motor apart, and for the $200 on ALL new bearings.. why not?

Alright, I HAVE TO BRAG! The guys at the machine shop were GREAT! For all you Tower Of Power guys that have opned up their exhaust cover and seen nothing but black! CHECK THIS OUT!!
ITS CLEAN! AND SHINEY!!

When you reinstall the inner exhaust/water jacket cover, install it dry no sealers of any type. Make sure the bolt holes and bolts are clean, also use a good locking agent ( I use loctite 290 green) on bolts. The factory used Resiweld Hi-temp epoxy and torque to spec.

OHHH NO!! Well, i'm preping mself now to re assemble the crank, and GUESS WHAT! Cyl#2 and #4 are .015 over, with new pistons. I just checked the piston Kits that I baught.. They are only 2 Ring Pistons!!! Not 3 Ring!!! Is this going to throw off everything in the engine!? Damn!

Holy SMOKES!! I've got my CrankShaft all ready to go! ALL NEW BEARINGS! And it looks awesome!!
BUT the big problem thus far! I was installing the piston in cyl#5, and GUESS WHAT! I broke ring #2.. SON OF A GUN! But I did notice one big problem.... on the cyl walls, there are vertical scratches from the new rings.. IS THIS BAD?! I sure as heck hope it won't ruin the newly honed cylinders!!

Well, so far everything is looking good! Ive got the new pistons and rings all togeather, and inserted into the block, the fully assembled crank is attached to the pistons!! Like I said in my earlier post, i'm a little concerned with the scratches that are appearing from the new rings in the cylinders... however i'm sure that they are only because of high spots on the cylinders, and the rings.. They more than likely wear down with the breakin period.
Just one question for everybody here, I assembled most of the needle bearings with regular white grease, not the fancy Quicksliver assembly grease.. think this will pose a problem? Also the new upper and lower ball bearings have a clear looking grease in them, When I baught them from my local bearing dealer they were a sealed bearings, all I did was remove the seals on the sides of the bearings, should I use some compressed air and remove the clear grease, and oil them up with some light oil?

There should not be any high spots on either the rings or the cyl, you should not be getting scratches unless the block was not cleaned properly before assembly. There cannot be ANY dirt or grit. If you did not check before you put the pistons in you need to check your ring end gap and make sure there is sufficient room for expansion when they heat up. If you don,t you will destroy your new overhaul job. Did you use lots of oil when you put the pistons in?
As far as the bearings go, you should clean out the grease that is in them and lubricate them with 2 stroke oil. The other grease may plug your lubrication line that runs from the bottom bearing to the top. Eventually you would loose the top bearing as a result. I would dissolve as much of the white grease out with solvent as possible and oil it up with 2 stoke oil. I usually turn the crank by hand for roughly 50 revolutions while pouring oil on the journals and mains. The crank will be tight to turn initially but should smooth out as you go. Obviously the intake cover is off while you do this. If you feel the crank binding in one area do not push it, you may have a ring hanging up on a locating pin, you will break it if you push it.

I do not see any pics of your scratches, if you can feel them with your fingernail you need to re hone.

I know the scratches are not deep, Ive used a wooden squer to reach inside the cylinder to feel it, and it doesnt catch on anything.. its almost like the scracth is not there, but you can see it slightly..

In that case it sounds like you are OK, Im from Winnipeg origionally and I don,t know what a "squer" is, LOL. Your fingernail is the best judge as its connected to you and you will feel a problem scratch.

Well, I've finally got the crankshaft, and the crank cover finally on the BLOCK! Its the home strech now!
The next steps now are the get the new bleed restrictors in, I think i'm going to use a nice punch to open the orifice up a little more, then bond the new restrictors into the block.
After that its mount the new gaskets for the transfer ports and good to go!
Now here is my Question for everybody, I want to install the inner water jacket for the exhaust. Should I apply from permatex, copper gasket material to the new gasket? IT will withstand 500F no problem, and what should I use instead of resiweld for the bolts? I did find some loctite that will withstand 400F? And ideas?
