Re: 1985 115 Il 6
Arne,
Thanks for the info. Since I am by no means a mechanic I will go slowly on this project. I am planning to restore/detail this motor to go on my '74 Glastron GT160 project.
By the look of your boat you should not have any problem getting the engine running
I will be taking it to a pro to get a comp test shortly. After that I will get it on the engine stand in my work shop to start to clean it up and figure out what it needs.
OK, so you are at this point...
If you are lucky, all cylinders should end up around 120 > 125 Psi, with no more than 10 % between max/min cylinders .
Is so, there's no need to remove the powerhead
Then it's time to start by cleaning the carbs and check the timing ( good
howto here )
Could be smart to read tru
this one as well, since it's hasn't been running in a while.
Else..
- Use good fresh gas with 2% TCW-3 approved 2-stroke oil .
- Change impeller and check the oil in the lower unit.
- check all wires and hoses, replace if needed ( we don't want any fuel leeks and shorts )
- Clean and adjust carbs and ignition as described it the previous link .
- Find a propeller that will allow the engine to run at 5800 > 6000 at WOT ( light load )
The control boxes...
- Those old control boxes will work controlling throttle and gear but they doesn't not fit the electric system on your newer engine, so my advice would be to find a newer compatible control box ( not hard to find ), it would save you from a lot of trouble

As for the manual...
- Mercury part #90-75512 covers Mercury Outboards 1975 thru 1978 ( does not cover your ignition and powertrim, but the rest should be close enough ) .
- Mercury part #90-861344 Covers Models 75 80 85 90 115 140 150 (In-Line) ( not sure about the ignition and PT...)
- Seloc SEL1408 All In-Line 6, & V6 models 1965 thru 1989 ( the OEM manual are better, but this one should cover your needs ... )
- Clymer B726 (ISBN: 9780892873968 ) Mercury 45 - 225 HP Outboards, 1972-1989 .( I would prefer the Seloc Manual over Clymer, but this one are OK )
I have a '71 with a complete lower unit and a '73 with no lower unit but do have the control boxes and cables for both of them.
The 71 got a different bolt pattern between powerhead and mid, but there are some usable parts...
The 73 are very close to your 86 with the exception of the ignition system and powertrim.
Have just received the lift eye I ordered. Now to get an engine hoist for my own even though I have a neighbor who has one. I hate borrowing things.....
If you got the combined flywheel puller and lift ring... it's a good investment

, and I totally agree on you last statement, I don't like borrowing...
Happy new year...Things get a little cold this time of year where you are ?
A bit cold yes

, just below -20? C her now ..
