Re: 1985 115 Il 6

Start by removing the cow and the cowl support ( only need to remove the bottom bolts (2 bolts in front and 2 bolts at the rear) + 3 nuts on top ( 5/16" heads ?, vibration dampers. ).... you should now be able to remove the cowl support as one unit.

Next... remove the bottom cowl, this part are fastened to the bottom part of the cowl by 4 screws.... after this part is removed you can see the nuts holding the powerhead down to the mid/leg ( should be 8 nuts ), all needs to be removed ( the 2 in front can be a pain :), as it's tight .. ).

The powerhead should now be loose, but you will have to remove some wires before actually lifting the powerhead .....
The correct tool for this job would be a Mercury lifting eye, will fit the treads inside the center hub of the flywheel, lift the powerhead straight up .

BUT I would advice you to remove as many parts as possible before lifting... are easier to do while the powerhead are still mounted on the mid
( Starter, carbs, ignition, fuel pump/hoses ) .

Re: 1985 115 Il 6

Arne,

Thanks for the info. Since I am by no means a mechanic I will go slowly on this project. I am planning to restore/detail this motor to go on my '74 Glastron GT160 project.

http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/projectTut,p,524,00.html

I will be taking it to a pro to get a comp test shortly. After that I will get it on the engine stand in my work shop to start to clean it up and figure out what it needs. I have a '71 with a complete lower unit and a '73 with no lower unit but do have the control boxes and cables for both of them. Wish I could bring it to a shop and say have at it but can't go that route....... I have one or more Merc guys that I have been in touch with on the CGOA site so will see if I can get her done myself. I am looking locallyfor a Seloc or Clymer manual to guide me. Have just received the lift eye I ordered. Now to get an engine hoist for my own even though I have a neighbor who has one. I hate borrowing things.....

Happy new year...Things get a little cold this time of year where you are ?

By the look of your boat you should not have any problem getting the engine running :)

OK, so you are at this point...
If you are lucky, all cylinders should end up around 120 > 125 Psi, with no more than 10 % between max/min cylinders .

Is so, there's no need to remove the powerhead :)

Then it's time to start by cleaning the carbs and check the timing ( good howto here )

Could be smart to read tru this one as well, since it's hasn't been running in a while.

Else..
  • Use good fresh gas with 2% TCW-3 approved 2-stroke oil .
  • Change impeller and check the oil in the lower unit.
  • check all wires and hoses, replace if needed ( we don't want any fuel leeks and shorts )
  • Clean and adjust carbs and ignition as described it the previous link .
  • Find a propeller that will allow the engine to run at 5800 > 6000 at WOT ( light load )

The control boxes...
  • Those old control boxes will work controlling throttle and gear but they doesn't not fit the electric system on your newer engine, so my advice would be to find a newer compatible control box ( not hard to find ), it would save you from a lot of trouble

As for the manual...
  • Mercury part #90-75512 covers Mercury Outboards 1975 thru 1978 ( does not cover your ignition and powertrim, but the rest should be close enough ) .
  • Mercury part #90-861344 Covers Models 75 80 85 90 115 140 150 (In-Line) ( not sure about the ignition and PT...)
  • Seloc SEL1408 All In-Line 6, & V6 models 1965 thru 1989 ( the OEM manual are better, but this one should cover your needs ... )
  • Clymer B726 (ISBN: 9780892873968 ) Mercury 45 - 225 HP Outboards, 1972-1989 .( I would prefer the Seloc Manual over Clymer, but this one are OK )

I have a '71 with a complete lower unit and a '73 with no lower unit but do have the control boxes and cables for both of them.
The 71 got a different bolt pattern between powerhead and mid, but there are some usable parts...
The 73 are very close to your 86 with the exception of the ignition system and powertrim.

Have just received the lift eye I ordered. Now to get an engine hoist for my own even though I have a neighbor who has one. I hate borrowing things.....
If you got the combined flywheel puller and lift ring... it's a good investment :), and I totally agree on you last statement, I don't like borrowing...

Happy new year...Things get a little cold this time of year where you are ?
A bit cold yes :), just below -20? C her now ..

Re: 1985 115 Il 6

Arne,

Just had the comp test done and came up with 125 x 6 cyl's ! Good spark on all 6. Lower unit has a bad seal with water in the oil but planned on a new impeller etc anyway...........

I was told that I might just take the bowls off the carbs and clean em and see if she runs ? Been sitting outside for 7-8 months. Might not need a carb rebuild ??

Looking good at this point. Not sure if the control cables and harness are the right length for the 16ft 160 as the boat the motor came off is a 17' Glasspar. Will take some measurements today.

- 0.5 Cel 31 - F here today. Might go do some ocean fishing today since the wind is down....

Great numbers :), got the same numbers on my newly rebuilt 115 ( not broken in yet ..)

Complete lowerunit seal kit from Mercury are #26-55682A1
Impeller #47-89984T4 ( impeller only, all gaskets needed are in the seal kit )

Guessing that's depend on the state they are in... a quick disassemble and good cleaning are not any disadvantage, if the gaskets survives there are probably no need for a complete overhauling with new carb kits...

I would take them a part and give then a good cleaning and tuneup ( check float level and inlet needle state ), not necessary because they were so bad but just to ensure myself they were 100% :)

New cables are not that expensive so.... as for the electric cables.. I believe Mercury had/have some extension cables available ??

Re: 1985 115 Il 6

Got the beast off and inside on the stand yesterday..........I think I will try to see if she fires up and runs without touching the carbs........ Might work, if not I guess I'll do what I have to. Do you think I should do the water pump/impeller first before trying to run it ?

Well... it depends how contaminated your oil in the lower unit are... if you had clean oil with no water you could probably start the engine and let it run for some time before replacing the impeller ( in a water filled barrel :) )... but I would have replaced it before putting the boat on the water.

I would not had run the engine with water in the lower unit, but if you had drained all oil/water and refilled with new/clean oil....
