Recently I purchased a 17 ' Lund Cherokee with a 1985 -140H/P Evinrude TLCO v4 motor on it.
We had a hell of a time starting it and then found one bank of carbs loose, tightened them up and everything seemed fixed. Now, however, in order to start it, someone has to constantly prime the motor and it starts immediately. Occasionally after starting it will start to surge, will drop from 5000 rpm to 3500 and then back up to 5 again. If you prime it, it will even out again and run fine for another 10-15 minutes and then repeat surging. Any help would be appreciated

Re: 1985-140 H/P Evinrude TLCO V4

Welcome!!

If some carbs were loose I'd start by removing them and going thru them. probably needs it anyway but if someone has been in them I'd like to double check everything. If they left the carbs loose, what else was not done right? Claen the carbs completely and install OE kits.

Its obvious we are looking at a fuel delivery problem. Start with the tank vent and work your way to the carbs. Look at the anti-siphon valve, look for fuel restrictions (crimped lines etc), primer bulb, and fuel/oil pump operation. Dont overlook the primer itself.

Good luck!
