Re: 1985 140 V4

The original thermostats were superseded by the black unitized #0434137 because the originals stuck in the seats and caused the engines to overheat. Be sure to check the seats as well because the unit needs to have a good seal.

The black units don't look like it, but they can be unscrewed to remove the thermostat for testing. It should open in water heated to around 140 degrees.

Its important that the diaphragm is in good condition and flexible and that the small hole in it is clear and correctly positioned over the slot in the cover.

right here is the complete kit, for both sides, and darn cheap>>> http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=111072&gd_row=52&**********=476941216

you can see accurate diagram here, http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=86d3d72aeba35dacbc349b439cb45104 CYLINDER & CRANKCASE

gasket
Part Number: 0394408
Description: DIAPHRAGM need 2

Part Number: 0394409
Description: THERMOSTAT AY need 2

Part Number: 0330273
Description: THERMOSTAT CUP need 2

Part Number: 0320880
Description: SEAT VALVE 5PK

you are past due changing them. the stat is heat sensitive, and opens when the block gets to a certain temp, and closes when the temp drops below that temp.

Tashasdaddy-I think the t stat kit you have linked is wrong. That kit is for a crossflow motor. The gaskets look wrong for the looper motor and they don't show the diaphram.

Ez-My diaphrams are gone. They are all out of shape. So I have to Imagine that the t stats are bad as well.I think I will just go ahead and change them anyway.I will go ahead and call in my order and see if they have the unitized t stats like you have pictured.

Thanks Shawn

Great. When you put the diaphragm in, don't use sealer. Just make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and smooth.

Re: 1985 140 V4

I have another question in regards to my t-stat job.On the t-stat cover their are bosses that stick off of the mating surface I would guess about .03 to about .05 around each of the mounting holes. There's not any recesses on the head mating surfaces to except these round bosses.I guess I'm asking is their supposed to be a small gap between the mating surfices for the diaphram or do I have something wrong?

Hopefully I worded that right. Thanks for any input on the matter

Are we talking 0.030" to 0.050" gap ??? (around 1 mm)
On mine the last bit there actually compresses a tad and makes the seal. Sequence tighten the 4 bolts though. Bit by bit and bit by bit so you don't break an ear off the housing.

The raised area around the holes keeps you from overtightening the cover. Check the attached photos - you can see how the raised areas are inside of the holes in the membrane.

If your cooling system is as produced from 1985 to 91 you'll need the screw on diaphram. If it's been modified and the water control valve has been removed you won't need the diaphram, just a gasket. As mentioned, if you have the white ones you'll want to switch to the newer black ones regardless of which system you use.

Re: 1985 140 V4

Thanks for all the replies.I've been away from a computer all weekend.I thought that the diaphram was thinner than the bosses around the mounting holes but when I put it together i figured it out.

Thanks shawn
