I understand the purpose of the duel steering cables on a high performance boat I have had one and the cable takes a beating in rough waters going over wakes and so on but is duel cables really necessary on a tritoon ? I'm running a. 115 Johnson now and it don't seem to take much beating with this type of hull . Any input please?

Its not that the cables take a beating....its the torque of the motor which makes dual cables safer on the V-6 motors. Bass Boats commonly use dual cables on motors 150 hp and above; however, it has not always been that way. I ran a Mercury 150 Optimax on my 21' Sea Pro CC with a single cable system...it came from the factory like that. So, to answer your question, go with the single cable if that's what you already have.

When the bass boats became popular, their speeds created a need for dual cable steering systems. From those early systems on, many manufacturers installed dual cable systems on any ouboards of 150 hp and higher. (not all mfgr's did this.) I don't see the need for a dual cable steering system on your low-speed pontoon with a 115. If you ever upgrade to a 150 on that tri-toon, I'd consider going to the newer hydraulic steering system for safety. Many pontoon manufacturers require that third pontoon tank when going with a 150 and higher outboard. Since yours has that third tank, sounds like it may have been originally built to handle a 150.

Thanks gentlemen. I built my tri toon using a third log with transom built in and rated for the 150 .
