Quick question before I break the seal on the Spar Varnish. Someone suggested yesterday to use just fiberglass resin with out the cloth to seal the wood. Thoughts?

Re: 1985 21 ft Starcraft Slow Project

just realize you'd never be able to sell the boat to a FSU, UCF, FAU, or FA&M grad if you ever got 2 foot itis......

sounds like you have your work cut out for you if you have to gut the underfloor, clean and seal inside of hull (that water in your foam got there from somewhere and it usually isn't all from above...plus i'd never miss the chance to fix this for once and for all while i had the floors up), cut and install foam, and cut seal and install floor all before next week. AND have the boat working well enough for display to the relatives....feasible if you don't have to worry about pesky stuff like going to a job or if you're 23 and have all the energy in the world

Luckily I am off this weekend, have a short day on Monday and then off for the rest of the week. I am only doing the bow area this week. And who says i would ever wand to sell it? It is a Starcraft!!!

Nope, brittle w/out cloth. Spar will out perform it..... Use the spar, multiple coats, treat any holes you drill in it or screw holes w/ additional spar or 5200. Check regularly, touchup as needed.....

Sounds good. Plywood is cut and fit, just got it out as the rains came. Hopefully they stop soon so I can get this done!!!

Despite the rains ere is how far I have gotten. The one thing that really bugs me about this pour in foam, it traps the water and doesn't allow it to flow back to the drain. I am half tempted to cut a piece of pipe in half length wise and lay it in the bottom to allow for more drainage.IMG_8322.jpgIMG_8323.jpgIMG_8324.jpgIMG_8329.jpg

It's really bad where the gas filler tube runs. Picking a new on up tomorrow. The other side isn't too bad.

Finally got everything back together. Only had 1 minor mess up. We carpeted the wrong side of one of the benches. Taking her out to the lake in the morning. Should have some new pics then.

Got the center floorboards out and the tank disconnected. Took me most of the day to get the tank separated from all the foam just to find out it won't fit between the top of the I-beams. I took everything back out of the bow and now I am trying to figure out how to get the tank to slide forward to get it out.

Hey Tig, I bet the foam in the area of the fuel fill hose smells just like it did on mine SEWER yuk. The tank can be real tricky to get out, i had to dig all the foam out along the sides of the tank so I could move it to one side, then you can lift the other side up over the stringer to get it out.

Thanks dozer, I ended up completely stripping out the entire boat. Once the foam on either side was out the tank lifted right out. Yes, everything around the tank smelled and was completely saturated.

Dozer,
It is getting down to crunch time. How difficult is it to pull the motor and outdrive?
The mech that was going to do it is swamped right now and I really wasn't planning on spending the $400 to get it done.

The motor/outdrive pull isn't that bad. Just take lots of pics and notes while you're taking things apart and label stuff. But you should have a manual.

Thanks NB. I am a little intimidated but with everything I have read it doesn't sound like it will be that bad. The motor was running perfect before this started and I just hope it stays that way when I get done. I did find a link to an online manual in one of the forums on here. The hardest part is going to be figuring out a way to lift the motor and outdrive. The boat won't quite fir in my garage.

Hey Tig, other than needing a big reach for lifting the motor out it is pretty easy, most wires go into maked plugs, but there are a couple I tagged. After you pill the out drive, disconect the fresh water hose from the transom plate, the fuel line, wiring and the motor mout bolts, out it comes. If you look in the Mercruiser section you should be able to find a link to the manuals you need for free, Don S ussually comes to the rescue with them he has them on 4shared. Great guy with tons of knowledge he is sharing with everyone who wants it on Iboats.

Re: 1985 21 ft Starcraft Slow Project

Busy weekend. Tank is stripped, pits/ holes filled with JB Weld, primed with 2 coats of 2 part epoxy and finished with 2 coats of 2 part Urathane. All the foam and old carpet is out. Motor is disconnected and moved forward about 5 feet. Transom caps removed and plywood is out. I am thinking 2 sheets of 3/4 laminated together and adding a piece of 1/2 where the gimble housing attaches. That will give me about 2 1/8 inches (book calls for 2" - 2 1/4""). While the varnish and glue dries on the transom and floor boards I will start removing the decals and prepping for paint. I also need to start building the seat bases and back cabinetry. i will have some pics in the next day or two.

Re: 1985 21 ft Starcraft Slow Project

Ok, been super busy but have been able to accomplish quite a bit and I promise to get some pictures up this weekend. Motor, outdrive and transom assembly are out. I am taking the boat to the shop Saturday just to get the motor hoisted out of the boat and onto my trailer. Transom cap and transom removed. Everything above the waterline is sanded and all accessories are removed. All the floorboards are cut, sealed and carpeted. I must say Dozer's floor looks much neater with the large solid pieces, but I plan on adding under floor storage later so I kept all my floorbards kind of a modular design. New transom is cut, laminated and sealed. I will be priming the inside of the transom, bilge area, wood portion of the transom and the plywood piece under the gas tank this weekend with the 2 part epoxy. The seat bases are cut, built, sealed and carpeted. The back cabinet face is cut and sealed. Once the transome and bilge are primed I will be installing the motor and outdrive so I can start on the dog house and side panels while waiting on the paint barn to open up.

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention this project needs to be complete before I move in mid November.
