so i bought an 86 Reinell with a 4.3 and cobra drive that needed a new motor, PO let it freeze. I found a screaming deal on a reman 85 4.3. not realizing the difference would be a problem, I bought it. Think i can make it work IF i can find a coupler with the larger diameter bolt pattern. Question is am i correct in thinking it will work and is it possible to find one? none of the sites to purchase one have the bolt pattern listed.
Thanks

Re: 1985 4.3 in place of an 86

many 1986 boats came with an older 2pc rear main seal block, have you actually verified the difference?

regardless, 0983902 COUPLING ASSY. 1 $269.14 Available

coupler is available at any Evinrude Dealer

or Sierra 18-21751
ENGINE COUPLER

you will also need a flywheel, and I'm not sure if the flywheel cover changed.

shop.evinrude.com for all the parts books online - just compare 1986 "KW" Prefix (don't use 1985) to 1987 parts to see what all changed with the crankshaft change

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,....

So, you're pullin' a 1pc. rear main motor, 'n puttin' in a 2 pc. rear main motor,..??
Howard says you can get the coupler, but mentions yer flywheels,...
Do you have 'em Both,..?? are they the same diameter,..??

and I'm not sure if the flywheel cover changed.

If it did, it's an OMC change, 'n Not a GM change...

Only the crankshaft bolt pattern changed, 'n both flywheels(total diameter) can be found on both diameters(bolt patterns), dependin' on the starter mountin' holes available...

thanks guys, was starting to wonder if I'd ever get an answer. Yeah, putting the 2 piece main block in place of the 1 piece. I ordered that coupler. I'm assuming the flywheel will not be a problem. Any smallblock flywheel prior to 85 will work correct? Fairly certain the flywheel cover will work. Now the problem is finding an oil pan lol

Nope,... It's Gotta be from a 4.3l,.... The 4.3l don't interchange with a V8, the balance is different...

shop.evinrude.com will show you the flywheel part number for any chevy 90 deg v engine you want to look up. (and OMC uses Chevrolet part #s for engine parts like that)

Okay I'm really having trouble finding an oil pan. Anyone have one or know of a source?
