I have a 1985 40 horse Mariner. I think I broke something in the stator area. I had a pop noise at a low rpm cruising speed. Motor will still turn over and will start. But it has a noise coming from the flywheel area. I also noticed a little bit of metal shavings. My question is there a trick to get flywheel off. I have removed what looks like everything and bolted on a puller. But I am affraid something is going to break. The flywheel seems stuck. Any help would be great. Either on the problem or help with removing flywheel. Thanks

Re: 1985 40hp Mariner flywheel question

Hi,
If it is anything like the 60 it is a tapered spline and requires a very ridgid puller. It will pop and come off easily but has to be strong. Don't beat on it with a hammer because there is magnets in it and you wouldn't believe what a new flywheel costs. (over 700.00 for a 60). Also don't lay it on anything metal. It can mess it up. You should get some info from somebody else as I don't know much about your year or HP. Mine had a threaded hole in the center that you are supposed to screw a Pusher in that will contact the crankshaft and pull the flywheel off.
