I have a 1985 Johnson 70 HP with two problems

1) Ever since I have had the boat, the oil level gauge doesn't work. I have the correct plug in the back of the throttle. It appears that it is hooked up to the trim gauge (LOL). When i tilt the motor ahead, it goes to full.

2) I installed a Tach, and set it to the correct 6P setting, and I get nothing. There is power and ground, and all that good stuff. but no movement on the tack.

3) While I am at it I would like to use the battery isolator to charge up the batteries that I have. I would like to find the main charge wire, but because things are screwed up, I don't want to guess as to which one it is.

I suspect that the guy before has messed with the wiring connectors on the back left hand side of the motor, so that the proper colors on the throttle no longer apply. I don't see any splices or other cuts. Just a well intentioned putterer, with no idea what he was doing.

Can anyone send me a picture of what it should look like, so I can get them back in the right place?

I have the book, but the wire colors are not the same.

Thanks much for you help

Oil level guage? Is it measuring the oil in the VRO tank? I've only heard of alarms and shut-downs.

Yes it is the VRO oil tank. It has an alarm, but also a oil tank level.

The plug in the control box is the outlet for the tach. The trim gauge is seperate from that, although it may be linked enough to allow the gauge light to come on with the ignition.

I wouldn't know where to begin on the rest of it, as you're wiring isn't as it should be, colorwise...
