the black unit with the red knob on the end, which they refer in the manual as a solenoid valve, "primer choke system" I cannot find in the manual were the proper setting is, 12'0 clock, 3 6, or 9.. someone who is familiar with thhis unit will probaly know by heart what is correct..i know one direction it shoots gas in the cylinder on its own without the key assist..i just do not know were to set it, i have fingered through this manual, they do give a rebuild description, but nothing on the setting? thank you. All of you guys are very helpful .

Re: 1985 70 johnson ,primer choke question,

Normal 'run' position is turned clockwise until seated. It will end up with the red lever inline with the body of the solenoid.

Re: 1985 70 johnson ,primer choke question,

If this item is not working properly will it effect motor performance? If so, how? Also, it says in the manual that the ohm reading between the purple and white wire and the black wire should be between 4-7..if it is more does that matter?

Re: 1985 70 johnson ,primer choke question,

if the primer solenoid is not working, or the valve sticks shut, cold starts will be a b***h. if the primer valve is leaky, it floods the motor.

if the solenoid is not working and resistance is out of spec, it means you have a faulty solenoid.
