1985 70hp fuel pump

I have a 1985 70hp johnson with the VRO2 pump. When I tried to start it today it was very hard to start and when it did run it was smoking out of the vro and then stalled, then when I tried to restart it, the pump caught on fire. Very exciting stuff. So my question is, since the oil side has already been bypassed and I am running pre mix, could I get a pre VRO fuel pump and just use that?

You could use a 1982 era 150hp pump and still use the pulse line.
