1985 85 force hard starting

ok heres one for you guys... 85 force runs great! (i know i know shocking) anyway when i have it tilted all the way up (as high as the tilt will go not using the tilt bar) and go to the lake, 7 miles away, and put in it will crank and crank until the starter gets hot and wont start. then out we go so i can sit on shore with it on the down position,for a few minutes and it will pop right off.... im wondering if the fuel is draining out of the carbs during travel and the needle an floats are being bounced around too much and i have to prime the snot out of it and let it sit for a few and then no issues..... yes i do use the choke and have put a new solinoid on recently as the old on was bad....any ideas?

Alos it has a 13 x 14 prop on it and can do about 30 on the water. not bad considering that we are not a skinny family lol anyway is this the best prop size or would a different pitch do us better?

this is issue is not found in the cold start section this has to do with what to do with maqking starting easier after the engines needle and floats have bounced around and after the fuel is out of the bowls.

and yes is agree search function is a friend
ah the heck with it ill figure it out myself

Easy big guy, just trying to help. If the bowls are shook empty, you have to squeeze the primer bulb to fill them back up.

Don't know much about motors, but my 1985 85hp Force runs great as well. At WOT it's around 5200 to 5400 RPM @ 35 to 37 MPH. When I drive it to the lake, around the same distance as you, maybe a little farther, it never starts on the first shot. Have you tried running the motor on "muffs" at your house to get it warmed up & then drive it to the lake? When I do that I have no problems at the lake. What type/size boat is the motor on?

Hey Guys,
I'm sure notsunkyet knows the cold start procedure-seems like he's been around awhile. In any case my 88, 85hp has the same issue. I don't trailer it that far to the lake but do think that its related to priming up the carbs. Always hard starting after sitting for a few weeks and I pretty much do the same thing as you when I'm at the lake, just take my time thats all. Guess its the nature of these motors.
What size is your boat. Mine is a Maxum 17' bowrider with a 13 1/4 x 15 aluminum and I get about 32mph on the gps in choppy conditions. I think the speed is affected by so many different variables though - I hear some folks getting close to 40mph with the same setup. I have old bottom paint which creates drag and surely slows me down, also depends on if your deck is solid and if there is water soaked foam.
I never had luck with muffs (can't get enough pressure up there to make me feel comfortable enough that I won't overheat) so I just don't use them. Either a big plastic container or the lake and the container is a bit much just for a warmup so I just do it at the lake and unfortunately, make the people waiting to launch at the ramp wait a little longer - they understand most of the time.
