After I got the green engine mounted on the jack plate, I dropped the foot, installed a new complete water pump, housing and all. I had a tremendous amount of trouble trying to find what the shift rod measurement was for that engine. That is the reason I didn't change engines out sooner, I couldn't get the engine to shift into both gears.
One of the members here on Iboats had a 140 hp Johnson and said the adjustment should be the same. I looked carefully at the Javlin shift rod and saw that the coupling had been screwed all the way down, just like the member here said. I screwed the coupling all the way down then backed off one or two turns, I knew I could get one turn out of the coupling after I reinstalled the foot with the carbs off.
After reinstalling the foot, I hooked the cables up and it shifted out perfect without having to readjust anything. I put the muffs on and the engine fired up and ran great, it did smoke like crazy because I had sprayed some Deep Creep in each cylinder. It has rained every day since, hopefully this week we can give it a try.
Thank you all for helping me get this motor going.
