1985 88spl idle problems

i have an 88 spl that runs great on top end but to start it you have to crank up idle speed i just dipped the carbs and cleaned them took it and tried it still the same thing just has a rough idle like its trying to die and then finally does after a few seconds at most any help would be appreciated

Have you checked compression and spark? Does it pick up if you hit the choke just before it stalls?

well i thought i was gonna check all that stuff and give some update but something came up ill post some results tommorrow but thanks and check on me tommorroew if ya dont mind

Must be at least and 87 model if it is a true SPL. If the carb idle passages get dried fuel in them, it won't idle. Moving the control box idle lever up opens the carb throat slightly, causing it to run off the intermediate range jets. You said you dipped the carbs-not sure you took them completely apart. Helps to completely disassemble them and blow an aerosol carb cleaner through all the passages, then reassemble. Also, make sure you have the idle set high enough, should idle at 650-700 rpm when in gear, sitting at normal level in the water.
