This is my first post in the forums, but I have been lurking for quite some time.

I purchased a 1985 8hp (E8RCOB) for a great price that was running rough. I have now cleaned and rebuilt the carb (w/ carb kit), new fuel pump, plugs, water pump rebuild, etc. I have gotten the engine to the point where it will start on the first or second pull every time and idle all day long in a tank with no problems with no choke applied. The second that I try to apply any throttle, it surges slightly and dies immediately. It will restart on the first pull and continue to idle fine. I have taken the carb off numerous times to recheck my work and have adjusted the float a few times also. I have tried several adjustments to the low speed idle with no luck. The only thing that I can possibly see wrong in the carb is that it looks like the previous owner might have slightly damaged the high speed jet (it looks like he tried to remove it and damaged the little slot used to unscrew it). I didn't want to take it out because it looks like it would definetly break if I did and I haven't been able to find a replacement anywhere online.

I just ordered a manual for this motor, but was wondering if anyone had any tips for me to start trouble shooting when it arrives. I have done everything I can think of with the fuel system. I have replaced the lines due to some dry rotting and bulb stays firm no matter how long I let it idle. Could it be a timing, linkage or sync problem? Broken or stuck reed?

Thanks for any help.

It sounds like you've done a great deal of work to get it running well. Once you get your manual there is a procedure called a linc and sync. Do that and see if it makes a difference. I hope it will. Best of luck. Rick.

If you have not removed the high speed orifice I suspect your problem is that you have not in fact cleaned the carb fully.

The orifice is available from SHOP.EVINRUDE.COM

Thanks for the quick replies!

I did remove the high speed orifice during the cleaning (i removed and replaced all of the lead shots and plugs as well).

The part that I am talking about is the skinny gold rod looking thing you can see threaded down in the carb body underneath where the high speed orifice screws in. I do not see that particular piece listed on any of the carb part diagrams. It looks like it would come out with a modified screw driver or special tool.

Thanks,

Shane

Be real careful here. If the part isn't listed I would think it is not replaceable and therefore should be left alone (just cleaned). I tried removing the choke plate screws on a carb. (why I'll never know) and broke the screw. Soon after I learned here the screw are peened over at the factory to prevent them from coming out. Had to buy a new carb.over that mistake. Rick.

I think I know what you mean. I think it's the tube that takes fuel up to the slow running jet. So if it idles OK I'd assume there's no problem there.

It is not shown as a replaceable part so i'd agree with Rick not to attempt to remove it. I think the main fuel flow is around the ouside of it so that where I'd be looking for trouble and the associated air passage but I guess that's accessed by one of the plugs you removed

I know this is an old thread but got the same motor had the same issues replaced most the fuel system along with the head gasket. Found it was the thermostat.
