I have no spark on a motor i just bought, i'm thinking it's probably the stator, I can't see it both power packs being bad although i've been wrong before. does anyone know if this is a common problem for these engines? what is the best way to test the stator?

Remove spark plugs, disconnect the large RED electrical connector at the engine. Crank engine by jumping the starter solenoid. If you have spark now, replace the ignition switch.

If not, look under the flywheel to see if the forward and/or rear portionof the stator is cracked and/or leaking a substance down on the timer base and powerhead area. If it is, replace it regardless of the stator readings.

I just had the same problem with my 85 70hp and it turned out to be the kill switch on the control. With the help of this board, it is fixed.
I was advised to disconnect the black/yellow wire and test for spark then, but be careful, because if it does start, the key will not work to shut off.
You can pull the black/yellow out of the small harness and it should be able to push it back in later.I made the mistake of having the top spark plug and wire in my hand to see if there was spark, when the other 2 cyls fired and started, leaving me holding a live wire (zap) and no other way of shutting it down other than flooding the engine.

Middlewick..... When testing for spark, ALWAYS remove the spark plugs. This is a dual purpose procedure...... one to obtain the highest cranking speed possible, the other is now obvious.

well after some testing I am in need of at least 1 coil, an ignition switch and a VRO Pump ($$$$$ leaking on the gas side of the pump $$$$$$), or as someone else suggested a newer style OMS pump. does anyone know what the part number is for a OMS pump for this motor? model number J90lmcos.
