1985 Bayliner 19 foot Capri

I have a 1985 Bayliner 19 foot Capri 2.1 cuddy cabin with AQ 125 Volvo Penta that we bought from my wife?s father three years ago. He originally bought it from a fellow in Oregon in the late 80?s and he very seldom put it in the water due to his age, retired. It took us ten years to get him to sell it to us and we use it a lot it is only my wife and myself and we only use it for fishing. Runs great handles good bounces around in large sea?s. I was wondering is this a sturdy boat? I found out in this 1985 Bayliner 19 foot Capri, I was told the transom was rotting and it should be replaced. Has anyone had this done before and what should I expect? I am new to this site and from what responses I have gotten so far it looks like I have found friends with the same passion. I want to thank everyone for the advice.

Welcome to iboats!

How was it determined that the transom is rotted? You need to be sure of the diagnosis. This is a fairly serious repair job, and it is very possible if the transom is bad, the stringers and cockpit sole are shot too.

I just got home from having the boat looked at by 3 different outfits. 1 a mechanic who did work on my boat before, he tuned it up. I was not impressed with his inspection, I think he would be my last choice. 2 by a boat dealership here in town that sells top end boats gave my a quote that sounded about right with the work he described that he would do. ?still not sure if he will get the job. 3 my last place was a boat fiberglass shop that specialized in boat repairs and construction. Jeff inspected the transom as well as the stringers and the floor to the best he could with out tearing everything apart. The transom has dry rot as well as the stringers. If he get the job won?t know how far the stringer are bad until he starts the job. He will replace the floor and fiberglass over it also as well as everything he fixes. Price was $7500. top end might be less depending on how bad stringers are. I was really impressed with his professionalism, I have on more place to check tomorrow.

Sorry, but for that amount, you could buy 2 or 3 of your model boat in decent shape.

I feel it is real pricey but what do I do with the boat I have now? I thought about parting it out and selling the engine and stern drive, windows and trailer but what are my chances?

You can make a surprising amount of money parting it out if the pieces are in good shape, you are able to disassemble the boat, have room to store the pieces, know how to price the pieces, and can be patient. The windows alone could go for $500 as a complete set.

I am caught in a real dilemma here it is the type of boat I always wanted just the right size for my wife and myself. I could buy another boat but would have to check for the same thing in it and hopefully there will be none. I know if I sink a big chunk of change into this boat I better plan on keeping it for the rest of my life. I am 57 and retired and that is ok to just don?t see spending 20 or 30 grand on a new fishing boat. The guy who gave the estimate of 7,500. Said it was on the high end and might be lower but the boat after it was done would out last me. I am in a real quandary here.

I owned that same boat and spent a lot of time on it....had a lot of fun on it...would not put 7500 in to it. Look around for what you can buy for 7500 for that size cabin boat and I think you will be surprised. The boat may outlive you but will the motor, gimble, ujoint, lower unit, ect... time to let her go at what ever you can get for her and look for a new piece of fiberglass.

Well the insurance company paid off our claim, we did ok the boat is a total wash out. I decided to keep it and forfeit about 400.00 bucks but got to keep my GPS and stereo and other electronics valued at about $2000.00. I have to go to the dmv and get a salvage certificate so if anyone has done this before all help will be appreciated.

Ok the story is that I bought the boat and did not realize that it must have had a dry rot issue. I added some up grades to the boat a new stereo and Lowrance HD7 and LWX-1 satellite module. I changed the policy when I added the up grades and insured the boat for 5,000.00. I went fishing one morning in Sept. and it was a little foggy, hit a dead head and did some damage to my prop latter on in the morning a few other things happened. I contacted the insurance company about a week later to see what would be covered if anything. Insurance man looked at the boat saw dry rot and looked at prop. He said it looked like I bent the shaft to the prop. They looked for a replacement shaft and could not find one, said dry rot was not covered but shaft was. I was truly blessed.

Yes I was blessed and it looks like with the way the economy is going I am considering keeping the boat and trying to do the repairs myself. I have read a lot of post on dry rot repair and this site is a great site with a lot of valuable information. I guess we will just have to see when spring comes, if I do the repairs I don?t know what has to be done if the boat has been declared salvage by insurance company?
