Hello!

I'm a newbie and am having trouble, would like some advice. I recently purchased a 1985 Bayliner Trophy 2060 hartop with a Volvo aq125b with a 270 outdrive. She is SLOW!!! WOT around 4500 rpm and only about 14-15 MPH per speedeo and GPS, this is with 4 people on board. The prop is not original and need to get the boat out of the water to see what the prop is, but it also came with a spare prop that is a 14x15. Motor is running great, although seem to labor very hard at 4000 rpm. Can barley get on plane with tabs all the way down. Any suggestions as to a proper prop size or anything else to look for?

Thanks!!!

Those boats were never really meant to plane, they are a semi displacement hull. A 20' boat is a lot of boat for a little 120 hp motor to push around. You may get a little more out of it. WOT rpm for that engine is 4700 to 5000 rpm.

Thanks Don,

I verified that the prop on the boat is 14x15. I realize this is a small motor for the boat and it's not meant to be quick, but the motor shouldn't have to labor so hard just to get 14mph with the bow all the way up in the air. I have read many forums on this boat and the average top end speed is around 24-25 mph. It just seems the engine is struggling to get it up and going.

This boat only saw water twice in the last 4 years so this weekend it's getting a carb rebuild, new plugs, fresh gas with a cleaned out tank and a new fuel filter. Hopefully it just needs some TLC to get the engine running nicely. Maybe this will clear up some of the problem.

Anyone have any idea what the original prop size would have been?

While your at it do a compression test and note the condition and location of each plug as you remove them.Check that the carb opens all the way.Is the bottom clean and smooth.
Is the timing set right and advancing as it should?Do a run with just you aboard see if you can get it to plane to get a max rpm and speed.
Your Prop size seems reasonable slightly toward the light end of prop pitch chart.
13" and 11" lighter and 17,19,heavier. 21
