We have had problems with this motor for the last several years. It has signaled overheating - but upon checking with a laser thermometer it was not. It has signaled oil problems and who knows what else.

At times, it will signal overheating but will run fine. Other times, it will start to cut out then stall and will not recrank for a while. My husband has replaced parts in the oil reservoir, sensors on the motor, and the spark plugs (plus I am not sure what else). The problems are sporadic (usually happening after 2 or 3 ski trips), so it is difficult to track down or know what to try to fix.

This motor has 507 hours on it and has been kept in a basement for its life. The boat is used for skiing.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions, as my husband passed away about a month ago - so now it is up to my son and I to try and fix it. Of course we want to get it fixed to go skiing. My son and I are willing to try to work on it (he learned much from his Dad) and we do have the book on it.

My only experience with the dealer in this area was HORRIBLE, so I do not even have any idea of where I could take it for repairs.

Thank you to anyone that offers help.

That engine has 4 sources that can create warning horns. The characteristic of the horn is indicative of what the problem is. Overheat: a temp switch on either head will sound a horn if the head reaches 212 degrees. High fuel vacuum: a vacuum sensor T'd into the fuel line will signal a horn if the suction in the fuel delivery line reaches 7 hg of vacuum. (a fuel line blockage.) These first two warning horns will sound a constant horn in the control box. The VRO pump: will sound an urgent intermittent horn every 1/2 seconds if it detects an oiling problem. The oil tank: will sound an intermittent horn every 20 seconds if the sensor in the tank detects low oil. There are tests for each of these in the factory service manual. You can also disable them temporarily for testing purposes. A factory manual is really helpful in solving these problems. You can get a factory original from Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee.

Re: 1985 Evinrude 150XP Overheating, beeping

I am attempting to order the manual and some parts, however, I am very confused. The motor is a 150 XP, however, I am not finding a listing for XP. So I assumed that was part of the model number. The model number on our boat is E150STLCOH however the closest I have found is STLCU. Can you suggest anyway to match this up.

Thanks so much.

The special XP and GT models were identified within the model number of the engine. The identifying mark as an "S" after the hp. 150S (or 175S or 235S.) Usually the S models have their own parts list on the Bombardier website: epc.brp.com. The CO at the end of your model number tells that it is a 1985 model. The CU is an 87. Those 150 XP/GT models typcially have 35 amp vented flywheels, 175 carbs, different heads, special vented cowlings with decals, stiff lower engine mounts-all of which are different from a base 150. They also put out right at 10% more hp than a regular 150-right at 165 hp.
