1985 Evinrude 25 hp poor idle, cuts out at WOT

I just purchased a 1985 Evinrude 25 HP. It starts up very easily, but will not idle. I have to almost "feather" the throttle to keep it running. I can slowly increase throttle to about 1/2 and it runs great. However, any sudden Wide Open Throttles, and it cuts out, then revs, then cuts out, then revs. If I pump the fuel ball about every 3 seconds or so while throttling, it runs great. Any suggestions? Fuel pump? Carb rebuild? Engine model number is E25RC0S I have been running a 50:1 fuel mixture.<br /><br />Thanks, Duke

Hello Duke123.<br /><br />I have recently rebuilt my 1985 20HP Evinrude and was running fine, that is up to now. I just bought a after-market tank and new line and bulb. After I installed it I took her out for a test ride and discovered a similar problem.<br /><br />When I first start it and accelerate everthing seems to be fine, once I open her up wide open she bogs down as if it is starving for gas. I slack back on the throttle and easer her up to speed again gradually. After a few tries she seems to run fine.<br /><br />My guess is that either she is getting air into the tank fitting, or the new bulb valve gets stuck. The reason I say this is that the old tank assemble worked fine and once I changed it, it started to act up. I will change the bulb and fittings as well as the fuel pump and let you know if it works. <br /><br />This would be the cheapest place to start for me as everthing else is new.<br /><br />Hope this gives you some help.<br /><br />Cheers<br />Newf

If this motor sat for any length of time get a OEM manual and rebuild the carb. I believe the kit in the states runs about 20.00 and is an easy job. Should cure your problem. By the way, welcome to iboats.

Thanks for the advice. I do believe that the motor had sat for awhile. I will rebuild the carbs. Do you think that I should rebuild the fuel pump while Im at it? <br /><br />Where is a good place to pick up the rebuild kits and manual?<br /><br />Thanks again. I am very happy I found this site. If the parts are not available at this site then your local johnnyrude dealer should have them. If there is not one close NAPA does a good job. If you want to do the fuel pump at the same time it won't hurt a thing. I believe the kit for it is reasonably priced to. You definitely will want a manual.
