Hey everyone..I'm relatively new to outboard repair but I have a question about an evinrude fuel system...

I'm trying to get my engine running right after it's been sitting for a few years...it fires up and runs fine, but won't idle right unless i'm manually playing with the throttle....I've noticed a red, triangle-shaped lever on the left side of the engine that's part of the fuel system...the engine seems to run better when I turn this lever counter clockwise, but not too far...is this some sort of a fuel shut off switch? Where should it eb set? It also looks like there's a valve coming out of it like you'd see on a tire's valve stem...what is that for?

thanks for any help!

Do you have to choke the motor in order to start it? Do you have a picture of the front of the motor so we can see what it is you are talking about?

Sounds like the manual choke solonoid. It has a red lever on it and its on the driver side top of the carbs. Its thats it, I'll just bet your carbs are gunked up and will have to be rebuilt.

no pictures unfortunately...It sounds like what would be the manual choke, it is on the driver's side but not on top of the carbs..The key has the typical "press in to choke" instructions on it but it does not work. The red-levered thing is definitely part of the fuel system so I bet that's it though.

If that's the choke, then what is the air-valve looking thing that's on it?

I'm just a noob here and only really familar with my 84 90hp. But I believe what your refering to is the manual choke. As I understand how they work is when you choke the engine it opens a fuel reserve behind the carbs and extra fuel is sucked into the crankcase. I believe its controlled electrically(sp). Then again your motor may be quite a bit different than mine. 84 was a oddball year for the fuel setup.

Try this. Go to ishopmarine.com then click on "parts search" that will bring up the screen where you can put in your model # to your motor and it brings up a schematic of your motor. It will tell you what the part name is. Good luck, Rudy.
