i got an 1985 40 hp evinrude that starts hard will run then wont start again till much later. talked briefly to a boat dealer his comment was that "it was bleeding out". what does that mean? just ordered a manual . what should i be focusing on the carbs? any help would be greatly appreciated.

when you pump the bulb does it get good and hard? Have you attempted to adjust the low speed needle? I'm guessing a little but it sounds like it might be flooding. When it quits pull the plugs and see if they are overly wet. Good luck. Rick.

i would start with a compression and spark check, then check for any fuel line leaks, then look in to the carbs.

Rick the 1985 40 has fixed jets, nothing to adjust.

Could be a leaking float valve in the carburetor. Try this: Run the motor till you would expect to have a problem with a restart, then shut it off and immediatly disconnect the tank hose from the motor. If the re-start problem disappears, it probably is flooding from a bad float valve.

i got the manual, did a compression test 5 times each cylinder both were in the 120 to 122 range. pulled the carbs and they look like they have been rebuilt, well the gaskets all seemed new. plugs are fouled after its been run then wont restart. could it be choke system?

have you checked spark when it will not restart? your compression is fine.

Yes, it could. Do as I said and immediatly unplug the hose when you stop and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you have to figure out where the leak is. Carbs or primer??
