I have a 1985 50hp Evinrude outboard model # E5BELCO that I am considering putting power trim/tilt on. I have posted this question in my restore thread and recieved some advice but id figure id try over here.

Basically i was told that having power trim/tilt is an advantage cuz ill be able to get the top performance out of my 50 horse, but i was told to look for an OME one and steer clear of the panther and CMC due to price and my motor only being a 50hp.

Now i have been looking on ebay for models and have come across some good used OMEs for 200 and below but what exactly do i need to look for as in condition? Are there certain questions i should as to make sure im getting a good part? And is it worth even buying power trim/tilt for my 50hp?

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks up front!

The main thing is to get the whole unit which includes the electronics.

Most of the used units you see have been painted over with spray paint so you can't tell much about them from pictures, but you want to be assured that the rams are not pitted, that there are no leaks, and that the motor is strong.

Try to get a limited warranty.

Thanks for the quick response and the info. When you say electronics I assume your are speaking of the motor on the unit? Are you including in that gauges and such? I'm sorry if these questions seem elementary I am new to the trim tilt world... Thanks for your patience and help!

I found one on ebay.. This company specializes in used outboards and outboard parts.. I asked if he had any to fit my motor and he replied " I have a nice freshwater used one for $265 with a 30 day warranty" How does this sound?

If complete with everything mentioned above, that sounds like a smart buy.

Thanks tashasdaddy for the clarification! Much appreciated!

Is there a good reference that I can look at to check for application capability for my motor with used units?

I found a power trim/tilt that came off a 2000 Johnson 50hp... the guy says that although the part numbers are differ it looks exactly the same. He says that sometimes the part numbers change if they do things such as changing a metal piece to plastic for example.

How do I figure out if this will fit my motor or any unit for that matter?

Re: 1985 Evinrude 50hp E50BELCO Outboard trim/tilt question

So after looking for a while I think i have decided to just eat the extra money and buy a CMC PT 130. I would find units but the question of whether or not it would fit always came into question. From one guy i talked informed me that apparently there were two different bolt on brackets made for my motor at that time. When talking to him all the measurements matched up for the cylinder but what was iffy was the tabs for the trim and whether or not it would affect lateral movement of the motor !?!? I had no clue but he was suppose to send me pic of the unit and explain what he was talking about and that was weeks ago.... sooooo ya.. any clue?

Also will any trim gauge work with the CMC PT 130 cuz the price difference in the with and without gauge units is ridiculous? Any help would be great!

Good move. Once nice thing about the CMC is if you ever get a newer (and in your case probably bigger :p) motor that has TnT, you can easily sell the CMC unit for close to what you pay for it. Any gauge would probably work but it won't have a sender!

So the sender is what controls the gauge? or does it limit the trim? Sorry if this is juvenile question... What is the purpose of the sender?

EDIT: Ok so the sender controls the gauge basically... did a quick search.... Would it be better to buy the unit with the gauge or find some separately? Also how crucial is the gauge?

Re: 1985 Evinrude 50hp E50BELCO Outboard trim/tilt question

I don't have a gauge currently and haven't found it to be problematic. Trim all the way down to start, once on plan trim out till she starts to porpoise and then back in a little bit. Don't really need a gauge for that. I just bought a totally bada(s)s multi-function gauge for my boat though that has a trim gauge as 1 of the 4 and am hoping it will work with my sender. It's just a nicety and I don't know that I'd blow the extra hundie on it.

Re: 1985 Evinrude 50hp E50BELCO Outboard trim/tilt question

So after doing some research I have come to the conclusion that I am gonna save the hundred and go without a gauge. I saw a lot of comments on trim gauges and their accuracy. Seems to be most people find them a waste of dash space even if they have one and only a huge benefit for I/O rather than OB. So I am ordering the CMC PT130 w/o gauge from overton's as they are having a 15% off $200 dollars or more sale... also goin to bundle it with other stuff i need like vinyl, steering, etc. Thanks for all the help
