I have a 1985 evinrude 150,model# e15tlcos.the problem is the bulb wont stay pumped up.it will idle or you can rev it up but it dies as soon as the bulb goes flat.i`ve replaced the bulb, rebuilt the carbs, replaced the filter.could this be a vro problem or am i overlooking something? The vro on this model is #174257 and they say it was replaced by #5007423.the #174257 doesnt have wires but the #5007423 does.will it still work? It also has a hose running from vro to vacuum switch.do these go bad often?i was told they were obsolete.is there a replacement? I dont want to spend the money on a vro if the problem lies elsewhere.please help.

I didn't look into the differences on the vro, but the fuel pump and vro pump go bad all the time. so that is a good possibility. or you have a vapor lock on your gas tank.

Does the bulb go flat or can you keep the mtr running by pumping the bulb ??

It dont go all the way flat and you can keep it running by pumping the bulb.when it dies you can pump the bulb back up and it will start right up.

Re: 1985 evinrude fuel problems

The only time the fuel hose bulb should get hard is when you first pump is up prior to starting each day. Once the engine starts, it draws fuel through the hose bulb and it will get softer. That's normal. It should not collapse, however. If the bulb goes flat, likely there is a fuel restriction somewhere. The pump is working, but can't draw fuel, so sucks (collapses) the bulb. The 5007423 is the correct fuel pump-the original pump supercedes to this one. The vacuum switch has been discontinued. If your engine did have a major fuel restriction, it's possible that the high system vacuum might set off the vacuum switch, causing a constant horn- if the suction got higher than 7 inches.

any suggestions on where the fuel restriction may be.i`ve put new lines and bulb on and have the same problem.

I am having the same problem with my 140 Johnson, I talked to a repair shop and they suggested that I check the pick up line in the fuel tank.

Re: 1985 evinrude fuel problems

tried a different tank and does the same thing.any more suggestions.im leaning toward the vro.

Update: i changed the plugs, primer bulb, hoses, gas lines and tank.it will run at idle as long as you pump the primer bulb.a few seconds after you stop pumping the bulb and it will die.it will not start back up unless you squirt gas or carb cleaner in carbs, then as long as you pump the bulb,it will idle.it does not empty the fuel out of the fuel filter, and if you remove the fuel line it is pumping fuel so i dont think its the vro/fuel pump.the oil alarm isnt going off either.any suggestions?? please help! this problem is keeping me from fishing and i need to get it resolved.:(

You state that if you "remove the fuel line, it is pumping fuel." Which exact fuel line did you remove for this test? Which side of the pump was that fuel line on? The test for a weak fuel pump is to constantly prime the fuel hose bulb. That forces extra fuel around the fuel pump-directly into the carb bowls. If the engine only runs while you constantly prime the fuel hose bulb, the pump is probably weak. Check to make sure your pulse line is not leaking air.

replaced the vro.it will idle and rev up for a couple minutes then die.pump the bulb up and it will start again and do the same thing.it wont run longer than a couple minutes.its like its getting to much fuel and dying.could the floats be sticking?does the vacuum switch on this engine play a role in the fuel getting to carbs? i`ve replaced and done everything i was told.im open for any suggestions.please help.

The vacuum switch warning is a constant horn. It will sound when there is a fuel restriction. This usually occurs at high rpm's when the engine requires max fuel flow. Have you had an warning horns with this problem?
