Re: 1985 Glastron X-19 Complete Restore

Mountain_Man,
You logic make perfect since. Mine are the same way. My boat only had one blower on the discharge side. The main purpose of the blowers is before you start your engine to get the fumes out before the big boom. When you are moving the air flow is as you stated. Don't need the blowers while moving.
So two blowers like SKIBUM1M mentioned would work fine.

Re: 1985 Glastron X-19 Complete Restore

Call me stupid if I am, but my thoughts on a blower on each side, is that when they are on they would be moving the same air(to a certain extent) and not really improve the airflow that much.

By the way since we're revealing ourselves, here's a pic from last summer getting "blackie" out of my shop and putting him back under the house where he belongs.

Yep the beard is about 2" longer now and will have to go when I start grinding fiberglass.

Mountain_Man,
Heck man, the glass will just blend right in with that beard. :D
Nice snake too. I use to have a couple pets like that too, in my youth, but that's another story.

He's not actually a pet. He just lives here and shows up from time to time.

I have some friends in Colorado that breed exotics. I can thank them for my lack of fear of snakes.

Nice beard man. I will never get out of my boat what i have in it. I just love having one and being able to work on it. I am scared to look at all the receipts.

You could always get one of those beard covers that guys in cafeterias wear.

Re: 1985 Glastron X-19 Complete Restore

Thanks for the help guys. Although I haven't got started yet, I'm learning tons watching your videos and following your threads. Thanks for the ideas Frisco! your stuff has got me thinking a lot. I've also been looking for those deals you've found.

Hey the snow's finally gone. Now I just have to find time.

This new job is kicking my but! Not hard, but 7 - 5 is like sun-up to sun-down. I'm not used to that discipline. I've been on my own for 6 years.

It would be nice if I could take the boat up to the warehouse and leave it. Then I could work a couple of hours every night before coming home:D Plus we've got a robot arm that could probably flip it for me.

Maybe I can get some pics this weekend. I want to "catalog" everything (before)

Your friend looks like he could take care of the gopher I have been fighting with! I'd like to rent your robot....boat flipping isn't really all that fun! Looking forward to seeing your pics.

I do have a question (dumb as it may sound)

What grit flapwheel do you guys use on the old fiberglass tabs? and how far do you take it down? Just until it's smooth?

I use a 5" grinding disk with a fiberglass backing plate, but most of the guys here like the flappers. I typically rough up the surfaces I'm going to glass with a 36 grit disk. You just need to get it where it is clean and has some "tooth" to it. I always clean mine with acetone before I grind it to get wax and grease off.

OK, Thanks. I picked up a 4 1/2" side grinder but wasn't sure what kind of disks to get. I've also got one of those toe kick saws for cutting the tabs down first. Hopefully no oops!

Mountain_Man,
I used the flapper disk, either 36, 60 , 80 grit. They will all eat a lot of glass in a hurry. So watch it. Like archbuilder I just got it smooth , not perfect but smooth enough to allow the glass to lay down.

If you are doing alot of grinding I found a buffer/sander with a 7 inch 36grit disk makes it go 10 times faster

Mitch,
I'm a visual guy so I hope this helps.

This is what I used for grinding- a flap disk- I went through about 5 or 6 of them.

This is about what it should look like after you have sanded down an area- you can see the difference from the paint down to the fresh glass- vacuum and acetone to clean everything up and you are ready for new glass

It gets dusty real fast- so make sure you have your mask, glasses and tyvec suit on. The white in the pic is all dust.

I think I vacuumed out the hull 6 or seven times, and cleaned my vacuum filter at least 4 times throughout my sanding.

Make sure you cover up anything in your shop that you don't want a layer of dust on!!!

One thing Micks didnt mention is that all that dust is very itchy so the suit is a must. The resperator is also a must if you like breathing in the short and long term future.

Re: 1985 Glastron X-19 Complete Restore

Thanks for the help.

I plan on getting the suit and mask before starting.

After being in the military I actually considered a gas mask and hood from an army surplus store. Only problem is that they would want too much and it would probably be one of the old 2 eyed models instead of a full face shield. It would be darn hot too. I can tell you that from experience. I've seen a lot of people pass out in 80 degree weather in one of those.

yeh mitch- if you want to keep the beard you will have to go with some kind of full hood and mask. I wasn't sure what to expect but the fiberglass and paint dust gets everywhere. Once I was done everyday I would vacuum my mask then wipe it down with a clean damp rag.
This seemed to help and prolong the filters.
I bought two suits initially and ended up using three I think because I taped the wrists to my gloves and eventually they ripped

I figure the beard will have to go. I don't want to take a chance on getting my lungs full of fiberglass.

I can start back in August and have it back by Christmas
