Re: 1985 Johnson 115 Help Please!!

I have a 97 Ranger R82 Sport with a Johnson 150hp Fast Strike with this fuel starvation issue. My previous Ranger developed it just before I sold it and the current owner still has the problem. I've been combing through these forums in search of an answer. This morning I picked up my R82 from the local mechanic and he removed the anti-siphon valve completely. He said I'd be surprised to know how many boats run without one. Mine ran fantastic once I was able to get it up on plane probably due to the fuel pump, but the primer bulb would collapse and the engine would starve out. I can say the boat no longer has the starvation problems and it runs like new again. Worth every penny, but would have been better if I knew this was the problem. Everything else (compression, electrical, etc.) checked out great. Hope this helps.

If the primer bulb collapses it usually means either a bad bulb or a fuel restriction between the bulb and the tank. I have a fuel filter/water separator on my boat. The primer bulb never really got hard until I moved it before the water separator. Now it works as it should.

I removed the fuel pick up and there is no anti siphon device in it. So one more thing eliminated. I cannot find any air or fuel leaks anywhere.:confused:

Re: 1985 Johnson 115 Help Please!!

check your flywheel magnets. i have an 85 150gt that started out with similar issues. i bought a lot of parts including VRO to OMS upgrade, coils, power pack and was about to buy a stator. during stator removal i finally discovered that i had a loose magnet under the flywheel that would shift out of place during higher RPMs. check your spark by pulling spark plugs and have someone turn over the engine and if it seems weak or internittent on more than one spark plug that will be a sure clue to the magnets or stator. a visual check of magnets is a new practice i am initiating every time i have that engine cover off. a little JB weld fixed mine. hope this helps.
