I have a 1985 Johnson 25HP. The throttle on the tiller arm is hard to hold in the wide open position feels like it wants to retrieve back to the low idle position for some reason. I have greased all the fittings and no relief. I noticed there is a phillips head screw on the underside of the tiller throttle but I can't loosen it. Please help this is killing my wrist trying to hold this thing in the wide open position even in the mid range position its still hard to hold it there.

There is a spring inside the twist grip but I don't think it would cause your problem.
At the base of your tiller is there gears that control the throttle or is your throttle cable controlled?
Hook it up to the muffs (don't rev it to high) or remove the prop and run it in a barrel and see if you can see something.

Its cable controlled it doesn't have the knob on the end that controls how far it will turn like the newer motors have.

designed like that on purpose, if you turn the handle loose it goes to idle. safety feature.
