i have searched the forums and hope someone can help me, on my 1986- merc 35 hp- short shaft. i had a lower unit water leak on my outer carrier bearing o ring .i have all the oem and clymer books and a pretty good knowledge of this motor. i removed prop shaft & carrier and o-ring along with 2 rear shaft seals & new composite carrier nut ,no shims when taken apart. no bearings replaced. all looks good !psig tested,no leaks and added oil now i have grinding a little in forward and a lot in reverse sometimes will not engage in reverse. put all parts back in same or so i thought? any ideas what could be wrong thanks in advance. ps:reverse stayed on shaft, i did not touch anything else shift shaft, pinion or forward gear.

Did you torque the new carrier nut enough to ensure the bearing carrier is inserted all the way. Your description of the grinding sounds like it may not be all the way in.

hi thanks for your great post ,it was a little loose, tab washer bent- holding out. found a trick . put unit in reverse turn counter clock wise 1/8"-1/4" put back in neutral . now try gently, to put back in reverse should not go in reverse gear . if things are correct.again thanks lowered idle ,still a little noise going into gear ,but closer to what it was.
