If I accelerate quickly, it appears that the engine is flooding. I have to back off on the throttle and gradually increase speed. Is this a fuel problem or an ignition problem.

Any suggestions on how to fix it.

I have been using Penzoil outboard motor oil and have been told that it will cause prolbems. Is this one of them?

I appreciate any help.

Pennsoil is not the issue.

That motor is an inline 6? What makes you think it is flooding? If the motor bogs when quickly opening the throttle, the carb idle mixtures are ususally too lean. Have you done some carb work recently?

Had this problem several years ago on my 83, easy fix for me. Found trigger harness retaining clip under flywheel at top of block wasn't allowing trigger to rotate when control lever moved to max quickly at takeoff. Under gradual movement of control lever, was ok. Trigger loom had hardened over years and clip was providing too much resistance, bent clip out a bit and problem fixed. Check to make sure your trigger is rotating freely.

It is an in-line 6. The carbs were rebuilt two years agol.

I know where the flywheel is located but did not realize that there was something under it. Can the trigger harness be accessed easily?

Easy way to check if trigger rotating, remove cowling wrap and top cover. Operate engine to get problem to happen, have someone watch max timing screw, if it's contacting stop on block the trigger is rotating freely, and you have other problems. If not rotating freely, figure out where binding, To access the harness clip, you pretty well need to remove top cowl support. I attached some pics, I already have the top cowl support removed
