Hey fellas, I bought a 1985 sea ray 250, runs very well and I have the morning cover, bimini, campertop, snap in and out carpet, I really like the boat. Boat overall is pretty good condition, however while doing some checking I found some rot back in the bilge area. Rear bulkhead is soft and also these runners, I think they are the stringers, they are on the outside of the batteries. My question is are these structural pieces, got a idea how much a shop would charge to replace this rotted wood ??

Do a complete evaluation of this vessel.-----Might be hard to find a shop to do this " patchwork " type of repair.-------You would be shocked by what a shop would charge to do a complete gut and rebuild.

yes, the rotten bits are structural

yes its repairable. however the rot is more extensive than you see. it will be in the transom and bulkheads as well

no, you cant afford a shop to do the work for the following reasons:
  • its about 500 hours of work and shop rate is $125-$200 an hour
  • the boat is not worth paying a shop to do the work
  • most shops wont take on the job.

However you can do the work yourself. just follow the stickies at the top of this sub-forum for guidance. specifically sticky 4, links 14, 15, 18, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b in that specific order.

you will need to remove the motor/drive, all the interior bits, and most likely uncap the hull
you will need to build a cradle
it will cost you about $2500-$3000 just in materials and incidentals to do the work yourself

Agree, it's likely a full gut amd restore, and that finding a shop that will take this on is going to be tough. If you do the work yourself I would budget 18-24 months and $5k - $7k, assuming you have a place you can work on the boat that is dry and that you can get above 60F in the cold months. That $ should cover some tools and incidentals / upgrades you decide to make along the way.

Yep, not great news. Boats rot from the bottom up, so there will be a lot more ugly below the deck.
