After reading the replys from Howard and Bruce. On the Gastron. Went on the lookout for a different boat. Found the Sea Ray 18 ft bow rider, running with good tags. The owner has actually been using it on the weekends for fishing. What should I be looking for on this boat? As to it being a good deal or not? Any places of special interest that I would need to look for on this boat?

as to it being a good deal what asking price is the owner asking and also what other information do you have on the boat other than it runs and has good tags...........I sold a boat a few years ago that ran and had good tags and i could take it out on the lake but that didnt mean it didnt need 3 grand worth of work done to the out drive .......just saying.

How's it powered?

Basic specs are calculated with '170 hp'. Isn't that a Merc 470 (3.7 liter)? Not a good choice.

This boat has the mecruser 3.0 4 cyl. 140. But unable to find that setup anywhere online for a 18ft. Think it may be a replacement? Or he gave me the wrong length and it may only be 17ft. He is two hours away to look at it . And will not be able to do that until Sunday.

Re: 1985 Sea Ray bow rider

my .02 would be if after a sea trial it ran out ok it would be worth the 2k in the market im in but any problems found mechanically that were more than a couple bucks here and there I would look elsewhere........thats just judging from the two pics and info that has been provided thus far. I sold a 17' 96 sunbird stinger BR that was in mint condition inside and out with a 3.0 OMC Cobra except for the o/d needing rebuilt, for $2800 with a mint trailer.....thats what the buyer offered but I also was upfront and honest with the buyer and found that to be a fair price......they bought it and dumped 3k into it and easily had a nice $6,000 boat so it came out about right. It all comes down to what you expect and how much you expect to spend to get it where you want it. Unfortunately boats are not like cars, you cant just put a few bucks into one and expect to get a year out of it ........I learned that the hard way ......boats are very needy

Re: 1985 Sea Ray bow rider

Messed up the link above- sorry. Here's the right one...

Model Archives : Sea Ray Boats

I don't see any boat smaller than 18' in 1985, and the only one they list (Monaco SRV 185/187) is a cuddy, not a bowrider. That in itself seems odd- like Searay's archives are incomplete.

Ah, well- a 3.0 is better than a 3.7...

Boat looks good on the outside from what I can see, but the inside is questionable ... In my market, I'd be trying to get that one more like $1,500. But check the sole/floor and transom really carefully ... looks like someone tried to re-do it.

This time of year, if a non-rotted boat with a good powerplant hits the market for a fair price, it's gone quickly. You need to be able to move fast.

This is what I found thru NADA Guides for the Sea ray Models of that year. And the 3.0/ 140 does not even show for that size and year. Thanks for your responses and I guess we will see this weekend what it really is.
