I have a in the box omc 5" extension kit for their 25hp two stroke motors 1985 to present. I have done a conversion on a 9.9 from 15" to 20" shaft 1987 model. Did not require that I go into the lower unit. Drive shaft fit in from the top of the lower unit and the shift shaft screwed in - in place of the shorter one. Will my late model 2004 short shaft 25 johnson 2 stroke convert the same way or do I have to go into the lower unit? If so what is involved?

Ok now I have my 2004 Johnson 15" shaft ready to add the extension kit to it. Everything looks like something I can understand as far as exchanging the drive shaft, the shift shaft, the water tube, and mid section 5" extension piece. <br />with this kit are what appear to be two mounting studs where the engine / exhaust tube would mount and also two studded rubber bumpers along with a gasket to replace the powerhead to exhaust tube seal. Several Johnson dealers who I have asked for a labor quote tell me it is not necessary to remove the powerhead to install this extension kit. I would appreciate any guidance or comments from a knoweledgable person about this 5" extension kit installation and is the mounting stud change necessary. My kit is genuine OMC and was made in 1986. Part number for the kit equates to fits 20, 25, 30 hp 2 stroke from 1985 to present. thanks, ben

Do a search in the faqs for lower unit assembly or something to that effect and I bet you will find what you need. If not then "bump" your post.
