Was it normal in 1985 to install a shift/throttle lever at the helm that you can not pull out or press a center hinge button to allow the operator to disengage the shift while still have the ability to "rev" the engine? Just asking because I can not disengage my lever to "rev" the engine without putting it in gear.

I am talking about a controller that can disengage the shift mechanism so you can keep the engine revvvved to warm up

There WILL be a way of engaging 'throttle only'. The trick is finding it. It could be a button somewhere, or the whole lever needs to be pulled out, or a lender hidden at the back. But it will be possible.

Ok thanks for the replies..I have tried pulling on the whole handle unit but it may just be stuck like my distributor weights were. Salt water and the salt air is a killer.
