Should there be a small hole in the gimbal race such as the one shown in the pic? Also how do you remove this shift cable slide?

That hole belongs there.

You must disconnect and remove the other end off the lower shift cable - at the engine end. Then pull the entire inner cable out from the slide end. Cut the tie wire and remove the setscrew. The cable then pulls through the slide, through the set screw hole.

No need to mess with the tie or the likely rusted set screw. Just disconnect from the control end and then pull the whole cable and slide out through the bellhousing. Or just cut the cable. Assuming you're replacing anyway...

In order to remove the slide from the inner cable, the wire must be removed from the setscrew, so the setscrew can be removed. The slide then comes off the cable.

But as Rick pointed out, the entire inner must be removed from the outer first. That means removing all the hardware from the shift plate end of the cable....

The hole in that position is from factory. It's in front of the gimbal bearing, and allows excess grease to move out of that area between the bearing and the seal in front of it. If it wasn't there, pressure would pop the seal out.

I didnt really need to remove the slider. I will just remove the inner from the shift assembly and pull out the core. I need to replace the shift cable bellow is the only reason. I am replacing all of the bellows. Project ***** was setting in salt water for like 6 months and was not running when I bought the boat. Attached photo is of the gimbal I took out yesterday morning. Soaked it with PB blast for 3 weeks and popped out on the 5 hit of the slide hammer. Inner bearing collar will not spin on the bearings. Another pic of the starboard trim sensor and some barnacles for an added bonus.

I was assuming that he was trying to replace the cable, in which case removing the control end bits is sufficient to pull the inner cable out with the slide...

The small hole in the race kindof caught me off guard because of the sitting in salt water I thought it had corroded a hole in the race. This is my first project with an I/O boat.
