The six check valves on the carbs are they one way valves and if so which way is the flow. What do they do.

Not so sure that you have a check valve on those carbs. If you are referring to the small hose barb at the top of the carb, that is the inlet for the hose from the cold start fuel primer system. They are always open. (those carbs don't have choke plates.) Fuel is injected in them when the key is turned to on, and the key is pushed in.

No they arent the primer inlets. Guess I should have said they are actually on the intake not the carbs. There is one above and one below on the intake where each carb bolts up. Small brass with a screen on the out going hole just your standard nipple on the other side. There are two other nipples on the intake I know what they are, they oil the crank bearings.

You are referring to the 6 check valves in the intake manifold. One per cyl. These are part of the recirculation system on later crossflows. It is designed to draw excess fuel from behind the reed valves when the engine is idling. Perhaps to prevent an idling engine from loading up. They are one way valves. 392988 and with age, may not work at all. About $ 20 each. Your engine will run fine without them, as older engines did not have them-but you may want to spend some time to get that system operational for better idling. You will want to make sure that if these valves work, that the hoses to them are intact (not leaking.) Found on V4 and V6 engines.

Its your recirculation valves critical for a clean and perfect running motor. Not to mentioned routes oil to lube the upper and lower bearings. See your hose routing diagram in your manual.

Your mtr will not idle fine without them. Yes, it will idle but when you take off all the fuel that built up behind the reed valves dumps into the mtr and will cause a "bog". These valves recirculiate fuel back into the cylinders and is burned up when mtr is idleing. They are an important part of the fuel system. Older mtrs also had a recert system but they used small reed valves in the plate the reed valves were atached to. If they messed up you could also have a bog. Been there and done that.
