i'm trying to drop my lower gearcase. but can't find a connection to gear shift linkage. this shift rod twists side to side , instead of up and down. maybe its a fork on lower end and will slide out when unit drops ? i really need to replace impeller in water pump. anyone have a suggestion ?

I'm not familar with that motor, but my 1988 Yamaha shift rod just pulls off, well, the shifter in the lower unit pulls out of the shift rod in the intermediate housing. I would guess that yours is similar. There is nothing to loosen, just remove the bolts for the lower unit and pull it off. If there is a water tube for a speedo, then you will have to disconnect that.

Drops down like a Mercury. While the gearhousing is off, check the shift shaft in the exhaust housing if its used in salt water. They love to rust in half. Of course, in order to change the shift shaft, you have to pull the powerhead.
