I've got a 1985 Yamaha 90hp,went to the river, couldn't trim up to get the transom saver off.The trim switch works to trim the motor down, but not up.Does this sound like the switch or something else.I can hear the trim working while its going down and goes down fine, just doesnt go up.The trim motor makes no sound when i hit the switch to trim up.
If this is a simple fix I could do the work myself.Does anyone know the steps to take to replace the switch if that's the problem?

You should have two trim switches, one on the motor and one on the throttle lever. If nether one works, your probably have a bad tilt/ trim relay. Unless that is that the pump motor does run when you select the up position. In that case consider topping off the pump reservoir.
First get a wide blade, straight slot screwdriver or bit and back out the bypass valve screw so you can manually raise the motor to get to the fill port. The screw is captive, it will not come all the way out. Cant move it? Am not surprised! Now you need a cordless drill/ impact wrench. Start with a low torque setting and start backing the screw out. Slowly increase the torque until the screw loosens.
But if the motor turns at all, you have a bad relay. Not cheap. The relay just switches the polarity of the DC power so you can use two jumper wires by pass the relay. The relay can be repaired, take it apart carefully. The toughest part is removing the O rings that seal each stud coming thru the relay cover. You will then see how cheaply this relay is made. The points are nothing more than dimples pressed in thin copper strips. The contact points will be burned and pitted. Clean the contact areas and reassemble. regards FRED

Ok Fred, thanks for the info.I would also add that I went out and checked all wire connections under the cowling, just checking connections on various things, and trying the switch after each group of connections that I checked.Had no luck, still didn't work, put the cowling back on,went to look at the throttle assembly, and hit the up switch and it engaged and went up.Has not stopped working but it wasn't until I out the cowling back on after checking all wired connections, that it started working.Im sure it wasn't a loose connection, but bad wiring/switch.

I also,Do Not have two separate trim/tilt switches, only one on the throttle handle. So as of right now, haven't had a problem with the motor trimming down, and only works sometimes to trim the motor up.

There is not much to that switch and they are prone to failure. I have seen them work when the humidity is high and quit when the weather is dry. It is a simple switch, 3 thin wires. Have never bothered to replace one but have installed a more reliable switch in a convenient location. I use a three position, spring loaded center off toggle switch. You can also wire one in on the motor if it would be more convenient for trailering. FRED

Thanks Fred.I haven't gotten to replace it yet but it still seems to work when it wants to,yet the Trim Down always works.Im confident that it is the switch,we just received a lot of rain from that lil rain maker Andrea here in North Florida and seems that the moisture got to it.

Re: 1985 Yamaha 90hp Trims Down,Doesn't Trim Up

My 2006 Yamaha 250 four stroke goes down, not up. I hear a sound when I press any of the three switches so it's likely not the switch. Thinking it is either the motor or hopefully the tilt/ trim relay. Any ideas how to check?
